Mikey 's Story
It is hard to look into Mikey’s soulful eyes and imagine that we almost lost him. This gentle 3-year-old was saved from the shelter euthanasia list with only 24 hours to spare, and that close call seems to have shaped who he is today. Mikey is a survivor, and like many survivors, he is a little careful with his heart at first. He isn’t the dog who will bowl you over with loud barking or jumping when you first meet; he is the quiet observer in the back of the room, waiting to see if you are kind. But if you can give him just a couple of days to take a breath and realize he is safe, you will witness a beautiful transformation. The shy wallflower melts away, and he becomes a total "mush" who just wants to press his side against yours on the couch and make up for lost time.

Perhaps the best way to understand Mikey’s gentle spirit is to meet his best friend: a stuffed lamb. "Lamby" is his security blanket. Mikey carries him gently by the ear, takes him outside to sunbathe in the grass, and if he misplaces him, he will search the house until the two are reunited. It is the purest, sweetest thing you will ever see, and proof of just how much love Mikey has to give.

Don’t let his quiet nature fool you, though—Mikey is incredibly smart and eager to please. He is actually an obedience school graduate! He worked hard to build his confidence in class and now walks on a beautiful heel, knows his commands, and has impeccable manners. He is the definition of an "easy keeper" in the home. He is fully house-trained, crate-trained, and trustworthy enough to be left loose in the house without any destruction or separation anxiety. He’s simply happy to nap while you’re gone.

Mikey is a "go with the flow" kind of companion. While he has a playful streak and loves a good game of fetch or a puzzle toy, he is largely a low-energy guy who doesn't demand miles of hiking. He is just as happy skipping a walk to cuddle on the sofa as he is going for a stroll. While he is friendly with other dogs, he is truly a "people dog" at heart. He is looking for a human connection more than a canine playmate.

Mikey has already survived the hardest part of his life. Now, he is just waiting for the best part to begin. He is ready to trust again—he just needs someone to show him that this time, it’s forever. Please fill out an application to meet him! https://www.welcomehomesanctuary.org/foster
