Mercury's Story

Mercury Update!!! Huge thank you to the Hechts for their incredible knowledge with less social pups and the patience they have in working with this sweet soul.

He is currently being fostered with them, fingers crossed he may stay furever but even if he does move on to an adopter, he will have had a wonderful base laid for him by this incredible family.

He is still very, very shy, but is showing a strong attachment to me. He will hide away in one of his two "safe spots" for much of the day, but will come sit under my feet at my desk, or snuggle up to me in bed- when I am there. He is 31 pounds! Truly a precious and special pup!

Pictures: https://photos.app.goo.gl/8oDSRXQWPqmLqzUb7

Personality & Temperament
This sweet boy has an exceptionally kind and gentle heart, but he is currently very, very shy. He is still learning what it means to live in a home and to trust the world around him. He will happily accept affection once he feels safe, but sudden movements or fast approaches can startle him, causing him to scurry away. With time, patience, and a calm environment, his affectionate nature continues to shine through more each day.

Socialization & Confidence
He is still extremely under-socialized and will need an adopter who understands fearful or shutdown dogs and is willing to move at his pace. He prefers quiet spaces and often chooses a cool tile floor where he can relax and observe. This is where he spends most of his day. While he hasn't found his voice yet (we have not heard him bark), we suspect that as a Pyrenees mix, it may emerge once he feels fully safe and confident.

Other Dogs
He gets along very well with other dogs and is submissive and gentle in his interactions. He would do best with a calm, confident canine companion who is not overly dominant or pushy, as he can be easily intimidated. He has shown no signs of resource guarding and coexists peacefully with our family dog.

Training & Daily Life

Not yet house trained, but he will potty outside when taken out regularly

Still learning to wear a collar and is making slow, steady progress

Has not yet been successful on walks and has never truly been walked before — we are giving him time and do not want to push this too quickly

Does not enjoy the crate at this time; we are working gently on helping him feel more comfortable with it

Eats very well and is motivated by routine, though he is not food-motivated for training

Currently underweight and recovering from prior malnourishment

Safety Needs
Because he does not yet have recall and is easily startled, he will need a securely fenced yard. He should not be expected to safely navigate unfenced areas or busy environments at this stage.

Ideal Home
His ideal adopter will be:

Patient, calm, and experienced with shy or fearful dogs

Willing to let him decompress and adjust on his own timeline- this may take months

Able to provide a quiet, predictable environment

Open to slow, confidence-building progress rather than quick milestones

Bottom Line
This is a dog who has clearly not seen much of the world yet — but underneath the fear is a deeply sweet, gentle soul. With time, consistency, and love, he has the potential to become an incredibly devoted companion. He will thrive in a home that sees who he is today and who he can become.
