Melba's Story

Melba is an 8 year old 8 lb mixed breed. Maybe chihuahua mix. Very petite body with long legs. She ended up in the shelter with her many brothers and sisters when her owner couldn’t care for her anymore. She’s a low to medium energy dog that wants nothing more than to be with her people. She bonds quickly. Melba is very unsure about new things and needs someone who is patient with her and will allow her to take her time to adjust and figure things out. She does not like the crate and has panic attacks in there. If we absolutely have to use the crate we give trazadone and a raw marrow bone to relax her. We have been giving her free run of the house when we are out for a couple hours. We make sure she goes potty before hand and she hasn’t had any accidents. I wouldn’t say she’s 100 yet but if you’re consistent she’s great. <br/>Melba loves car rides and has become very protective of her car (and yard) and will bark if she sees or hears someone. She’s can be barky in the house on occasion. She also loves going for walkies but gets scared a lot so this is something that we’ve been working on. If she can go at her own pace and take a break if needed she does great. She enjoys the company of the small dogs and cats at her foster home and is often cuddling with them. I think she’d be ok as an only dog too if she had someone home a lot. A home with young kids would not be a good fit for her but I think older dog savvy kids would be ok. She LOVES to chew. Raw marrow bones are her favorite but she likes duck feet and bully sticks too. She has never chewed anything inappropriate but she did jump onto the dining room table and ate a loaf of bread so you’ll just need to make sure there is nothing within her reach! Her absolute favorite thing to do is cuddle. On the couch and in bed. She’s the best snuggler. She is an awesome, fun dog and will make someone VERY happy.
