Maxine's Story

Maxine is a Lab mix, female spayed. She is 2 years, 3 months old and approximately 34 pounds, but we are working on getting some weight on her. She has been staying with me and my husband as a foster since May 11, 2025. Initially, she was a very timid dog, but she is starting to come out of her shell. Now she comes up to both us, wagging her tail and nudging us for ear scratches. If I put my face close to hers, she will give me kisses. I can take her outside in a non-fenced yard or in the front yard, and she will immediately come back when I call her. In addition, she loves to do zoomies in the backyard. She loves soft toys. I have a soft tree trunk toy with stuffed squirrels. She likes to pull the squirrels out and carry them around.
I also have an 11 pound, 11 year old terrier mix. Maxine is very gentle with her. In addition, we have a bearded dragon lizard in a low tank – Maxine does not pay any attention to her even when the tank door is open. I have not seen her around children, but based on her actions since she has been with me, she will probably be hesitant and move away.
Currently, I feed her a mix of wet and hard food. She waits until I put her food bowl down, and I am able to take away her bowl and come near here when she is eating.
It is clear that Maxine has not spent a lot of time on a leash as she will sometimes pull when we go for walks. When we see other dogs, she will try to hide behind me or sometimes whine to meet them. She may make a low growling noise when she gets close, but if I pet her and tell her she is a good girl, she will stop.
Maxine is from Texas, was an owner surrender but to a kill shelter. Due to her background, Maxine will easily cower if someone moves too fast near her. Unfortunately, my circumstances only allow me to keep her as a foster and not to adopt her, but I would love too! She would be a great addition to any one’s family as she is a sweet, lovable girl who only wants to receive love back.
