Max's Story

Max: 3-year-old Male Yellow Lab, ~73 lbs, Soon to be neutered

Background:
Max made his way to Lab Rescue through Chowchilla Animal Control. Max’s life until recently was defined by lonely 16 hour days in the backyard while his owner was at work. Acquired as a puppy, as Max grew he became increasingly anxious and began jumping the fence in search of connection when his person left for work, twice ending up at the local hardware store, greeting customers and soaking up every bit of attention he could find.

After the second incident, animal control encouraged his owner to surrender him, knowing that Max’s emotional well-being and safety were at risk. They immediately reached out to Lab Rescue for help. Max is ready for a new chapter with someone who has time to give him the companionship he’s desperately been missing.

What Max's Foster Says:
Max is an apricot colored diamond in the rough. There are so many positive qualities that outshine the various areas that Max needs to improve. He is quite food motivated and trainable, both with the ability to wait to enter the house, as well as before digging into a bowl of kibble. He still needs work on impulse control, for areas like not taking toys out of peoples hands, or rushing off to meet other dogs.

His ability to leap fences is unexpected from a dog of his disposition and build, but it is something to witness. But he has also demonstrated the ability to 'chill' in social situations, even with lots of people and food.

Max has failed to be interested in squirrels at the park, and shows promise being around cats. Max is also a little apprehensive about riding in cars, but settles in after a while.

Max loves to cuddle. He is a 'people dog' and until he settles down, will be a yellow shadow for whoever is with him until he settles into his new home.

Max is above all, a retriever. His current exercise routine is based around a couple of Chuckit ball sessions per day. He loves his ball, but he also has done well with frisbees.

What Max's Rescue Rep Says:
Meet Max — Your Loyal 24/7 Companion

If you’re looking for a dog who will be by your side through every moment — whether it’s a road trip, a walk around town, or a quiet evening at home after adequate exercise— Max might just be your perfect match.

Max’s story hasn’t been easy. Chowchilla Animal Control reached out in desperation after seeing how distressed he became when left alone in his kennel — to the point of injuring himself trying to escape. It was clear that Max wasn’t being “difficult”; he was heartbroken. This sweet boy simply can’t handle being alone after what he’s been through. Max is capable of jumping 6-foot fences if stressed or chasing after a ball. If there’s something he wants on the other side—like his toy—he might attempt to scale even tall barriers.

Now that he’s safe, Max has shown what a wonderful, loving dog he truly is. He gets along beautifully with people and other dogs (cats are unknown), and he’s happiest when he can be included in daily life — car rides, errands, hikes, or even just hanging out while you work. The foster reports that he will help himself to another dog's ball so if the other dog is possessive, it can lead to scuffles.

He's reported to be a big time professional counter surfer.

Max is full of life and affection, and ready to bond deeply with someone. He’d thrive in a home where he can go everywhere with his person — someone retired, one who works from home, can take a dog into the office, or anyone who enjoys canine company 24/7. He might make a good service dog with proper training.

If you’ve been wanting a loyal best friend who will never let you feel alone, Max is waiting for you

We are looking for an active home where Max will receive the daily exercise and activity that he craves. He is a young, energetic boy, is very treat motivated, eager to please and would thrive in an active home with experienced owners who can provide him with company, training and exercise.

Medical:
Max will be neutered in October. He is microchipped, up to date on core vaccines, and has been heartworm tested.

Max is located in: San Jose. Reminder: our service area is within the greater SF Bay Area.

If you are interested in Max, please contact Rescue Rep Kris at krisellen.nm@gmail.com

In your email, please tell me about yourself and why you would be a good fit for Max.
