Max's Story

Meet Max (aka Maximillian, Maximus)

Max is a 4-year-old American Staffordshire mix with a handsome blue-gray coat, a big watermelon head, and soulful, expressive eyes. At 68 lbs of solid muscle (his head is easily 35 lbs of that), he’s an athletic, powerful dog with a truly soft heart.

Max is loyal, affectionate, and deeply bonded to his people. Once he feels safe, he’s playful, snuggly, and loves being close. He’s house-trained, crate-trained, and thrives with routine, structure, and clear expectations.

Max is a sensitive dog whose world has been turned upside down. New environments, people, and dogs can be overwhelming at first, so he needs a dog-savvy, breed-experienced adopter who understands canine body language and can step in early to keep him feeling calm and safe. On leash, he can become excited and reactive around unfamiliar dogs, making continued training and proactive handling essential.

Adopted as a puppy and later surrendered through no fault of his own, Max is exactly the kind of dog who can struggle in the system simply because he needs understanding and stability. The right adopter won’t just be giving Max a home—they’ll be giving him safety, stability, and quite literally a second chance.

He’s very playful and has shown himself to be extremely gentle and respectful with his older, smaller foster sister, adjusting his energy beautifully. Because of his size and sensitivity, he’s best suited for an adult-only home that can manage introductions thoughtfully and advocate for his space.

With structure, consistency, and a little patience, Max blossoms into a devoted, goofy, and incredibly loving companion. For the right person, he’s an exceptionally rewarding dog and a loyal best friend for life.

P.S. he’s a teensy bit slobbery 🤤

Max is in foster in Denver, Colorado.

*We require all adopters to come to Colorado to adopt. *We do not transport dogs. *

You can view this wonderful dog at https://www.milehighcanine.org/post/dogs/max

You can apply for our wonderful dogs at https://www.milehighcanine.org/adopt/adoption-application/.
