Mavis's Story

For Adoption: Mavis!

Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle.
We at PDR believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process.
To apply for adoption and for more information on our process and requirements, visit our website at https://pounddog.ca/adoption-info/.

Meet Mavis, a gentle, golden-hearted 7 year old Cocker Spaniel. Mavis is a small, beautiful parti-color cocker spaniel, with soft white fur and warm buff patches, long velvety ears, and those classic expressive cocker eyes. Her gentle nature shows in how she approaches people—leaning in quietly, seeking connection, and slowly learning to enjoy affection.

Mavis spent years in a puppy mill being used for breeding. Once rescued, Mavis needed some serious dental care. She had 25 teeth extracted and she is feeling much better. Despite her difficult start, she is a sweet, curious girl who is bravely discovering the world for the very first time. Sudden movement or new sounds do make her nervous but every day she adjusts a little more and learns that life can be soft and safe. Mavis always wants to be in the room with her people. She adorably greets familiar people by standing up and putting her paws on your chest. She wants to be nose to nose for pets or get some kisses on her head.

Mavis is making progress with house training. With a quick instruction to “go pee”, she is off to do her business. We are giving her frequent breaks outside as she does not yet go to the door when she needs to go. Mavis loves going for walks and exploring at her own calm pace. She walks well on a loose leash, happily sniffing her way through the world. She isn’t overly interested in other dogs but does greet them politely. After her walks, she likes to help with all of the household jobs. Wherever you are, Mavis will be. If there isn’t work to do, Mavis will take a nap or quietly play with toys or even watch the tv! Mavis is not suited to a busy city center living, but would do well in a rural area, a town, or a quiet subdivision. She would not do well in a busy high rise type of apartment building as she needs a calm and quiet environment, but could do well in a small building, or a townhouse style condo .

Mavis would do well in many different homes. She would do well being the only dog in the family (lapping up all of the attention) or being with another gentle dog who will show her how to be a dog. She’s pretty chill so she would likely adjust to and be respectful with cats. She lives with two birds in her foster home and although she shows some interest, she’s pretty relaxed. She would also likely enjoy children who are a little older, over 10yrs of age, and can respect her need for time to adjust to her new world.

Mavis is crate trained. She sleeps in it peacefully at night and sometimes chooses to curl up there during the day for a nap. She stays quiet in her crate until we wake her up in the mornings.

True to her cocker spaniel roots, Mavis loves her food. Treats make training fun and help her feel confident about trying new things. One thing to consider with Mavis is her grooming needs. She does shed and beautiful fur will require regular brushing and professional grooming. She needs regular ear cleaning as Cockers are prone to ear infections.

What Mavis needs most is a loving, patient home—a family willing to give her time, reassurance, and understanding as she continues to blossom. In return, she’ll offer gentle companionship, quiet devotion, and the joy of watching her curiosity and confidence grow day by day.

If you’re looking for a sweet, resilient companion who just needs someone to believe in her, Mavis may be your perfect match. She’s ready for her forever home—and for her first real chance at happiness.

Name: Mavis

ID # PDR1448

Age: 7yrs

Gender: female

Spayed: yes

UTD vaccines: yes

Breed: Cocker Spaniel

Colours: white and tan

Coat length: med

House trained: yes

Special needs: no

OK with kids: older

OK with cats: yes

Ok with dogs: yes

Status: adoptable

Microchip: yes

Size: small

Location: Waterloo

Adoption fee: $700
