Maverick

Maverick came from nothing. He was in the dirt, chained to a stack of old tires with no more than 4-5 feet to move. He was starved and completely neglected by the human who kept him as a cheap alarm system. Maverick had every reason to hate humans, but instead, he shows a dog's capacity to forgive and he gives love to everyone he meets. <br/><br/>Maverick was rescued by our local Animal Services Officers and at the shelter, this sweet boy learned what is to be loved and cared for. Maverick joined our program July 20, 2022. <br/><br/>From the very first day, Maverick showed us how smart he was, despite his awful past. He is both treat and toy driven, which makes training quite fun and easy.<br/><br/>More of an "easy rider" Maverick is calm, relaxed and tolerant. He has a great temperament with humans and dogs. Maverick could easily be an Emotional Support Dog for someone who would benefit from his calm demeanor. Maverick never meets a stranger and he loves belly rubs.<br/><br/>Maverick is a big teddy bear at 73 lbs. He has learned all his cues very well: sit, down, wait (at doors and for his food) go to his spot, stay, leave it, give, or anything else you ask of him. Maverick walks nicely on leash and takes treats gently.<br/><br/>Maverick is a cuddler not a kisser. He will come out of his crate and stare pitifully at his trainer Mr. White in his bed, looking up at him and hoping for permission to snuggle. If permission is granted, Maverick hops onto the bed, snuggles close to Mr. White and gives a big sigh of pleasure. If permission is not granted, Maverick will obediently go to his own spot or crate. <br/><br/>Maverick is courteous and respectful in the cell, never bothering Mr. White's property. He is happy to be a couch potato. Outside, Maverick enjoys exploring the play yard, watching inmates and staff as they go by, and he will chase birds that enter the yard.
