Marianne's Story

Meet Marianne!

***Foster Family Update!***

Foster Update for Marianne

Marianne is continuing to make gentle, steady progress as she learns to trust and adjust to her new surroundings. She's still a very shy girl, but we're seeing little signs each day that she's beginning to open up. She spends most of her time in her crate - her safe space - but she's starting to venture out more for little walks around the house and will even peek into my office when I'm working. She also enjoys spending some quiet time outside in our dog run.

We've been working carefully to help her associate people with positive experiences. She'll take chicken from our hands now before eating her kibble, and she gets a special treat puzzle toy every day with some cheese - she's quite smart and loves the challenge! Just yesterday, she walked up and sniffed me for the first time, which felt like such a big moment. I've learned to stay very still and calm so she feels comfortable and safe.

Marianne is still very cautious with touch - sudden movements make her nervous - but we're taking it slow and celebrating each tiny step forward. At night, she sometimes howls a bit, especially if she's feeling lonely, so we've been sleeping near her crate to help her feel secure.

She's learning about potty training and does a great job using her pee pads indoors, though she's also started to go outside more often. With consistency and time, we're confident she'll continue improving.

Marianne would really benefit from a calm home with patience, structure, and ideally, a bit more space to explore and build confidence. She truly seems to come alive with a bit of freedom and space.

And one last happy note - Marianne has started playing with a few toys! It's wonderful to see glimpses of her playful side emerging.

Another big week is here - a wonderful group of very lucky rescue doggies of all shapes and sizes, breeds and ages just arrived in Oregon from our amazing friends and partners at the Tulare Animal Shelter in California's Central Valley!

Each of these sweet pups has made a long journey north to the Pacific Northwest in hopes of finding what every rescue dog dreams of - a safe, loving, forever home.

***History from Tulare Animal Services:

Marianne & Oliver are our toughest case and are #1 on the list for euthanasia. It's killing me. I know these two have potential, but the staff is not taking an interest in them and allow them to just sit in their kennels all day with no interaction. They DID go outside this week, but it's going to take daily outings to get them to be semi-confident dogs. I've suggested splitting them up so that they can be housed with socialized/confident dogs, and maybe they will take their lead, but it hasn't happened yet. They will come up to the front of the kennel now, they can be leashed up, and they do walk outside. They LOVE other dogs, but they are so timid with people. They do not try and bite or snap, so that's a huge plus! They have been here since 10/18/24 and are about 1-2 years old. They are still young, even younger when they arrived and it's unfortunate they didn't get more socialization then. Both are altered and around 55 lbs.***

Because of all the changes and travel they've just experienced, we recommend following the 3-3-3 rule for rescue and shelter dogs:

3 days to decompress

3 weeks to start to learn your routine

3 months to fully settle in and feel at home

Most of our new arrivals will be heading into temporary foster homes, where they'll get a chance to rest, adjust, and start showing us their wonderful personalities. Some lucky ones might go straight into their flexible 3-7 day in-home adoption trials with their new families!

If you've been thinking about adding a rescue dog to your life, now's the perfect time - submit your adoption application today to become eligible for a meet & greet and a flexible in-home trial adoption with your future best friend.

Since most of these dogs have limited background information, we'll be updating their individual bios and profiles on our website as we get to know them better.

Could you be one of these pups' very lucky new heroes?

We can't wait to help match you with your new adventure buddy!

Could this wonderful pup be your next adventure buddy? Apply today to meet him/her!

steps to adopting

(OUR ADOPTABLE DOGS ARE IN SEPARATE TEMPORARY FOSTER HOMES BETWEEN BEND/CENTRAL OREGON AND THE GREATER PORTLAND AREA. THEREFORE, MEET AND GREETS ARE NOT DONE AT OUR FACILITY. TO LEARN MORE, PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR ADOPTION APPLICATION ONLINE AND OUR ADOPTION PROGRAM MANAGER WILL REACH OUT TO YOU WITH FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO MEET YOUR NEW PUP!)

The first step to adopting a dog from SDH is to complete the adoption application. First click on the "OUR DOGS tab up above, and then click on the orange colored "Fill out an Adoption Application here" button to start the process). Once submitted, please expect 3-5 business days or sooner for processing and to hear back from us. Once you are pre-approved, your adoption application will remain on file with us for 1 year and it can go towards multiple adoptions within that 1 year time frame before it expires.

To finalize an adoption you must sign the adoption contract and pay the full adoption fee. The adoption fee helps cover our costs. On average, per dog, it costs SDH between $500-$700 for vetting/medical/sterilization, transport and other rescue related expenses. All dogs are rescued and do not transport to SDH until they are healthy and ready to be adopted. All dogs are examined by a veterinarian before they fly, which includes sterilization whenever possible, given standard vaccines and rabies (if age appropriate). Most dogs are sterilized before they come into our program, however if this is not the case we will spay/neuter them once they arrive at our cost.

Upon their arrival, all dogs are seen for a wellness exam by SDH's medical team. Once the adoption is finalized, any further medical care or treatment will not be covered by SDH, unless discussed prior with our medical team. All known issues are disclosed to the best of our ability prior to finalizing the adoption.
