Margaret's Story

Meet Margaret! your cookies and cream dream girl!

Female I Cattle Dog Mix I 35lbs I 1.5 yrs I UTD on shots I Good with Dogs

Rescued from Northern Ontario due to being displaced from the forest fires in the area

Visit her Instagram @miss.margaret.seapaws to follow her foster journey!

Background

Margaret is a 1.5-year-old, 35 lb girl rescued in from a community in Northern Ontario that was affected by the forest fires. She has adapted incredibly well to home life and has become more confident every day. She is house-trained, crate-trained, and already walks beautifully on leash. She knows her name and several basic commands, and she has quickly learned the routines of her foster home. Due to an old healed injury to her back leg; it's been advised by a vetting team that surgery wasn't the best route to go. Instead she responded really well to gabapentin and is now living her best life pain and issue free!

Personality

Margaret is an outgoing, social girl with an enormous amount of love to give. She absolutely loves people and wants to be involved in everything her humans are doing. She is affectionate, silly and playful, with a wonderful zest for life that makes it nearly impossible not to smile around her.
She is also a huge fan of other dogs and has formed a very special bond with her foster brother. They love playing, chewing toys side-by-side, going for walks together and even sleeping with their paws touching. We think having a friendly, patient dog companion would bring Margaret a lot of happiness.
She can be a little mouthy when excited, but she is very gentle and has never hurt anyone. She is also learning that she doesn't need to ask every human for attention — although she certainly thinks everyone should be ready to provide pets!

Activity & Training

Margaret has moderate energy and enjoys several walks a day, playtime, toys, fetch, tug and outdoor adventures. She loves playing with her foster brother for 15-20 minutes at a time and then happily settles down to relax.
She is a fantastic leash walker and responds well to her name outdoors. She knows sit, down, come and all done, and understands her crate routine, including waiting for her free cue before coming out.
She is continuing to work on leave it, polite training around food and going into her crate without treats. She has made excellent progress with crate training and can now be left for several hours without issue.

Ideal Home

Margaret would thrive in a home where she can be part of the family and enjoy plenty of companionship, walks and playtime. A fenced yard would be wonderful, although she could also do well in an apartment or condo with regular exercise. We think Margaret would especially love a home with another friendly, playful and patient dog. Her social nature and bond with her foster brother suggest that canine companionship could really help her thrive.
She could potentially live with cats or other small animals with proper introductions and boundaries. She has a mild, manageable prey drive and may become interested in fast-moving animals or objects, but she is easily redirected.
Margaret would make a wonderful family or companion dog. She has not yet been tested with children, but her gentle, easygoing nature suggests she could do well with respectful children and proper introductions.

Summary

Meet Margaret — a gal with endless love to give! This joyful, affectionate girl is the kind of dog who makes life more fun simply by being in the room. She loves people, adores other dogs and wants to be part of absolutely everything. Margaret is house-trained, walks beautifully on leash, knows her basic commands and has made amazing progress with her crate. She is playful and adventurous but also knows how to settle and relax. She may need some extra consideration around her hips/back and continued support with her training, but she doesn't let any of that dampen her zest for life. Margaret is looking for a family — ideally one with a canine companion — who will appreciate her goofy personality, enormous heart and endless enthusiasm for life.

All applicants must be residents of Toronto, ON or the GTA to apply.

Apply here to Adopt
http://seapawsrescue.org/adoptionApplication.html

Sea Paws Rescue's Adoption Policy
Applicants must be at least 21 years of age. All adult members of the household must attend the adoption interview. We prefer that applicants have lived at their current address for at least three months. This is to make sure that owners have had time to settle into their new surroundings, and provides stability for the new pup who themselves have already undergone multiple changes in a short time. Because young puppies require intensive training and care, we do not place puppies younger than 8 weeks of age in a home. Because of potential behavior/training concerns, we are very cautious when placing young pets in homes with children under the age of five. If applicants have another animal at home, they must introduce the animals properly. We want to make sure that their animal is happy with their selection and that the transition for both animals' will be relatively smooth. All adopters must take the animal to a veterinarian within one week of adoption as Sea Paws Rescue (SPR) does not screen for all diseases including, but not limited to, tick fever and heartworm. All further examinations and immunizations from the date of the adoption are at the adopter’s own expense. SPR makes no health guarantees or warranties. All adopters must understand that there will be an adjustment period and their pet may experience behavioural and/or health issues related to the change in environment. Adopters must seek professional assistance from a trainer and/or licensed veterinarian if they have concerns about issues related to the adjustment period. If at any time, for any reason, a SPR adopter decides not to keep their animal, they agree to return the animal back to a Sea Paws Rescue representative. Under no circumstance will the adopter surrender a SPR animal to a local shelter. In the event of a rehoming, no part of the adoption fee will be reimbursed.
