Mallow's Story
Mallow - 8 years, 34lbs, Beagle, Neutered

This senior angel is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal's name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org

Their foster says: "Mallow is an absolute joy—a sweet, affectionate beagle who loves walks, sniffing, meeting new people, receiving belly rubs, cuddling in your arms, and eating his favorite high-value treat: boiled chicken. Prince Mallow is a true extrovert, and everyone who meets him quickly falls in love with him. He enjoys independent time and handles being left alone for a few hours quite well. He is also very interested in mirrors and loves to stare out the window and watch the people outside!
When Mallow first arrived in the city, everything was new and overwhelming. He took some time to adjust to loud noises and stairs, but he is a resilient learner. He is currently making great progress on elevator practice, fully walking inside on his own! Because he is still adjusting to city sounds, he may not be ready for the subway just yet.
On walks, Mallow is a true beagle: driven by scent, serpentining across the sidewalk to track exciting smells, or walking in a straight line when following a person's scent trail. Because he can pull when following a track, he needs a patient walker who is willing to continue his lead-training. He loves greeting every person he sees. While he is eager to approach other dogs, he can feel a bit uncertain up close (his tail may go rigid), so gradual dog socialization—such as visits to a dog park—would be great for building his confidence. When he comes home, he quickly falls asleep and snores like a good pup! Mallow did not know his name, so we've been working on name recognition, learning "yes", "no", "sit", and "come". He has started to sit more which is very exciting! In general he is slowly learning, so this will also require some patience.
Indoors, Mallow finds chew toys comforting, but his absolute favorite inside activity is his snuffle mat; I would recommend incorporating more scent games and enrichment activities for him."

Level of dog ownership experience needed: FLEXIBLE – We predict this dog will be low on the challenge scale with regard to exercise and mental stimulation requirements, but seniors tend to need a lot of help and understanding when it comes to lifestyle and veterinary issues. Seniors usually need quiet, calm environments and routines and do not do well with a lot of bustle, change, and rambunctious movement (kids and young playful dogs, for instance). This dog's adopter will need to be prepared for senior health challenges, which means frequent vet visits and very expensive veterinary bills. (An annual senior blood panel alone costs around $500 in NYC.) Senior care can also take an emotional toll on their humans. Adopting a mature pup is a wonderful thing to do, but it can also be difficult.

Energy level: Medium – Mallow loves to walk and needs a home where he has plenty of opportunities to sniff. He is big on "beagling" --catching scents and forgetting everything else. We are currently working on his pulling, so he will need someone patient who takes him on sniff walks. He needs a good balance of mental stimulation and a solid 60 min walk in the morning.

Okay in the city? Adjusting to the city – This is Mallow's first time in the city, so noises like trucks, construction equipment, doors slamming sometimes scares him. He has been adjusting quite nicely, so I think with more exposure he will be totally fine with these things.

Potty trained? Yes – No accidents so far!

Comfort level with strangers: Social butterfly – Mallow loves meeting new people. He loves saying hello to everyone he meets, so we are currently working on recall during walks so he isn't so distracted.

Social with other dogs? Yes – It's hard to fully tell here because he's been sniffing dogs here and there. He always wants to say hello to dogs and gets sad when he doesnt get to sniff them. However when he gets to greet a dog, sometimes his tail goes very straight and its hard to tell if hes good with the dog. He mainly ends up wagging his tail and starting to sniff them a bit

Social with cats? Probably. Seniors are usually mellow enough that they are able to coexist well with cats.

Respectful behavior with other animals (cats, small pets, etc.): Not sure – Wants to chase squirrels and birds so may not be a good match for a home with cats, rabbits, etc.

Comfortable with children? (ALWAYS requires adult supervision) Yes for most ages – Mallow is incredibly tolerant and has not been mouthy at all since I've been fostering him. I still haven't let him fully interact with small children to be safe, but he seems to be doing very well so far. From what I've seen, Mallow would make a fantastic family dog.

Mouthy behavior? Past this stage– The only time I've seen Mallow do mouthy behavior so far is with his little monkey toy. He will also chew his snuffle mat sometimes.

Separation anxiety? Adjusting – Sometimes Mallow howls, but this is very rare. He's mainly been very chill

Leash behavior: I would say this is the main area of work. He beagles a lot and obviously has never used a leash in his life. He pulls, cuts people off, and it's hard to pull him away from strong scents. He's gotten better but still will need a lot of training and will need sniffing time everyday

Cuddle bug level: Medium – Loves to snuggle and be near humans, but also likes his own space and sleeps on the couch

Jumping on people to say hello? Listens to correction – doesn't jump too much, only when he really wants a treat

Medical status: Healthy for their age as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm tested if coming from Tennessee or Puerto Rico; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake. Adopters will need to be ready for senior care – at a minimum, that will be annual checkups including senior bloodwork and a dental post adoption (most senior rescues need one).

How did this dog end up with Social Tees? Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee, Los Angeles, and Puerto Rico. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses.

This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes.

LEARN MORE ABOUT US: socialteesnyc.org and Instagram @socialteesnyc
