Makwa's Story

Makwa (meaning Black Bear) is a handsome, classic Labrador mix who's just 1 year old and 60 pounds. He loves people more than anything, loves fetch just a tiny bit less than people, and has enough energy and good attitude to practically generate power. In fact, our electric bill has been suspiciously lower since he arrived...

Sadly, Makwa’s life thus far hasn’t been easy. He came to us after his previous owners moved away, leaving him and another dog behind on the property. Thankfully, a kind neighbor stepped in to bring them to our shelter after confirming the owners were not returning for them. Despite that tough start, Makwa is more than ready to turn his life around!

Makwa is looking for a special home with someone who can help him work through some reactivity. While he is the sweetest boy with every human he meets, he can be reactive toward other dogs. He has improved significantly since arriving, and we believe that with time, patience, and positive exposure, he will continue to improve.

For now, we believe it’s safest for Makwa to be the only dog in the home. However, it's not impossible for him to have playmates in the future - the dog he was abandoned with showed similar reactivity and is now living happily with a canine sibling!

Makwa is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on his vaccines. You can visit him at the shelter Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM or Sundays from 12:00 to 5:00 PM.
