Meet Maize's Pups

TO CONTACT THE FOSTER HOME, email nebcr.amy@gmail.com. DO NOT use the Petfinder form. Inquiries don't reach us.

Maize's pups are now accepting applications! They were born on January 26th, and should be ready to go to their forever families around the end of March/beginning of April. They are mixed breed dogs - current best guess is herding breed heritage but an Embark DNA test was donated for one of the pups and as soon as the results come in we will update.

*Applications will not be accepted for a particular puppy!*

At this time as we are still getting to know their personalities and temperaments, making careful observations to what makes each puppy unique, to determine what their ideal home will be. Each puppy will be matched to an approved applicant based on the best fit for the puppy and the adoptive home. Applications are not first come, first served.

Mama Maize is a sweet, loving, and energetic girl. She weighs about 42 pounds currently. We have no information about the pups’ father. Maize was surrendered to a Georgia shelter just days before her puppies were due to be born, and transported to her foster home in the knick of time - she arrived late Saturday night and delivered her puppies less than 24 hours later!! She arrived in poor condition - heavily infested with internal parasites and with an abscessed and infected tooth! Despite this, she is doing a wonderful job taking care of her puppies. The puppies are being socialized with people, other dogs, cats, parrots, and novel stimuli in their foster home. As with any puppy, it will be important that the puppies continue to receive proper socialization. To ensure that adopters and their puppy will get off to the best possible start, part of the adoption agreement requires adopters to agree to take their puppy to a 'Puppy Kindergarten' class at an approved training facility. We are happy to help you find a good place to take a class!

All puppies are cute... and herding breed puppies are even cuter! Keep in mind you'll need to have a lifestyle that can accommodate an energetic, intelligent, playful puppy! If you are gone more than 4 hours at a time, you will need to have a plan in place for your puppy to have a midday break. Perhaps you have a friend, family member, or pet sitter who can come by for a mid-day play, meal, potty break for your pup, or maybe there is a local puppy daycare.

Keep in mind herding breeds were developed to have high intelligence, stamina to run miles a day often in harsh conditions, independence to make decisions on their own when necessary, and the desire to form a working relationship with their people. They are going to want to be involved in your life and they are going to demand an outlet for their intelligence and athleticism. If you think you've got the time and energy to keep up with an adorable ball of energy, please submit an application. :)
The puppies will to be to date on age appropriate medical care, including microchips, and will be placed with a spay/neuter contract. They are being fostered in New York state, about 30 minutes south of Albany.
