Maia's Story

Meet lovely Maia!

**APPLICATIONS CLOSED** Maia is a beautiful terrier mix rescued from the street during one of our sterilization campaigns in Soacha, Colombia in June of 2021. She's now in Canada and in search of a forever family!

At 26 pounds and about a year old, Maia is an adorable, affectionate scruff-bucket who will make you laugh on a daily basis. She is super smart, food motivated and learns very quickly. She LOVES other dogs and people too. In fact, she'd love a home with another playful and happy pup to keep her company.

Maia is tons of fun, kind of goofy and would probably thrive in an agility or tricks class where she can show off her brains as well as her scruffy good looks. If you're interested in dog-related hobbies, young Ms. Maia would be a great fit!

Maia was rescued as a young pup, she was hanging around during one of our sterilization campaigns, playing with the dogs in line for surgery. She seemed sweet, young and social, but she slipped away that day. Later in the week, we found her late one night, scrounging for food from garbage cans and we picked her up. She spent some time in foster care in Colombia and has now settled into her Canadian foster home in the east end of Toronto. Having been here for about 5 weeks, the Divine Ms. M is ready to put her street past behind her and find a loving and responsible forever family.

Maia is young and active AND a terrier mix, but overall, once she's had a walk and some playtime, she settles easily -- so we'd peg her as a medium-energy pup. She's still a bit leggy and an adolescent. M is learning to walk nicely on a leash and already knows her basic commands.

There is a cat in her foster home and she initially chased him but has learned to respect his boundaries. She may be okay with a cat, it will definitely depend on the cat (doesn't it always...). No very young kids but dog-savvy kids 10+ would be a great fit, they can tire each other out.

Maia would love a house with a fenced yard so she can run around. She's working on crate training and doing well, although she does bark for several minutes until she settles. She also has a tendency to bark at strangers and other dogs when looking out the front window in her foster home, we're working on that as well. She is sometimes startled by loud noises and can be timid in unfamiliar surroundings. Maia would therefore benefit from a guardian that is committed to working with her to build her confidence through positive reinforcement. She is mostly house trained, but expect an occasional accident as she settles in to new surroundings.

She has been vetted in Colombia and has been vetted here in Toronto as well. She is microchipped, spayed, vaccinated, dewormed and has tested negative for heartworm and vector-borne diseases in a SNAP 4Dx test, she has also had a clear fecal test, all in Toronto.

Maia's adoption fee is $1100.00. Save a Friend Dog Rescue conducts ongoing spay-neuter and public education campaigns in Colombia to help combat the pet overpopulation problem there. We therefore require our expenses to be fully covered from adoption fees so that we can continue our animal welfare work.

Please visit our website for more photos, information on the adoption process and to download an application:
http://www.saveafrienddogrescue.org/dogs-for-adoption.html

If you think you’d be a match for Maia, please contact us!
