Maggie (Spunky!)'s Story

Post Date 10/11/10 – Hi! My name is Mary Margaret, at least that’s what my Foster Mom calls me when I’m having a little too much fun, teehee! You can call me Maggie for short! I love, love, love to meet new people, even the wee little ones, who I’m very gentle with.

You see, I was a mommy and had my own babies, so I know how easy you have to take it with young ones. That’s how I made my way here to my wonderful Brookline Foster Home. I wound up being on my own after having my puppies. One of my puppies and I were being kept in a barn, where the shelter rescued me from….then me and my puppy spent some time at the shelter.

The people there were really kind to us and found a great new home for my puppy, who I missed dearly. But I kept getting passed by, even though they said I was a favorite of the shelter staff. There were more doggies coming into the shelter all the time, so things were not looking so good for me.

Then a lady from Brookline came to meet me and told me she was going to do everything she could to find a great Brookline foster home where I could stay until they could find my new forever family and that would make some room for other doggies that needed help. And before I knew it, she did find a foster family just for ME! and then I met some more nice people who helped me get to my new foster family! It was a long journey to get here, but with the help of my Foster Family, I’m learning that Life can be Good! My Foster Mom says now it’s my turn to have a family all of my own and that if I’m good, it will be soon. I’d really love that, so I’ll try my very best :o)

Maggie is an approximately 8-10 year old, very sweet and personable, small, spayed female lab mix. We estimate her weight at about 45 pounds, although she could stand to put on a few more. She’s got a shiny black coat and a little highlighting on her muzzle that accents her pretty smile :o) This girl is one energetic gal, so if you’re into going for walks, Maggie may be your new walking buddy! She recently won “Spunkiest Female” title at the Brookline picnic! She also settles nicely in the house and is learning how to be a member of a family household.

Maggie was a skinny momma dog when she first came to us (that Mothering takes a lot out of a girl!) but with some good food, veggies (and a little counter surfing thrown in!), she’s put on some weight and is looking great! She was recently spayed and has recovered nicely. She’s up to date on all her vaccines, is on heartworm preventative and is also microchipped. We’re not sure what she is mixed with, but she’s a very pretty girl, with a sweet smile and wagging tail.

She didn’t seem to know much about living with a family when she first came to us…in the words of her Foster Mom, “Maggie is like an 8-10 year old puppy in many ways, she is experiencing civilized life for the first time. She has just (after many weeks) started to sit when asked to, chew toys (sometimes a toy to only her) Racing after the thrown tiny football and, after many weeks, bringing it back!”

One of the rewards of being a Foster Family is seeing the transformation take place in a dog like Maggie as they learn to trust humans, learn new skills and gain manners needed to prepare them for a new home. And Maggie’s foster fur brother and 2 fur sisters are good role models she’s learning from… since in the care of her Brookline foster home, she’s learned how to walk nicely on lead, sit before she is fed, and has put on some weight. Her Foster Mom has really captured her personality with the following recent update:

“We initially fed her 5 small meals a day, but she is down to 3 now. When she gets hungry she starts counter surfing. Her ribs are still showing, my kids call her the Simpson's dog, only black! Maggie would not allow touching, but now will welcome pats & loving touch. She has not had a potty accident in the house since her spay operation 2 weeks ago. She follows my three (labs), last night I was laying on the bed watching tv & Maggie & Angus were snuggling with me. Every time Angus would put his head near Maggie, she would admit a soft growl, he kept it up & she eventually stopped the growling.

She is great with food, you can put your hand into her food while she is eating and she just keeps eating daintily. She still pulls a bit on the leash, she wants to run, but when put inside a fence she stands looking into the door. Maggie is wonderful with children. In the Vets office, she was so well behaved... She loves to ride in a car. At first she would not want veggies or fruit, but now does. Her ears were infected when she came here, while under drugs, Doc got the wax out of her ears and now she is very comfy.

She will counter surf if hungry. Maggie was fine with the cats in the vets office. She sleeps well either in her crate or in Angus’s bed. She loves to watch me cook, stands patiently and watches my EVERY move with her big bright brown eyes…She got the award for spunkiest female at the picnic. She is very cute! Her photos don't do her justice…Since Maggie has been spayed he (Angus, Maggie’s foster fur-brother) is not putting the moves on her like he was before her operation.”

Maggie would do well in a variety of homes as she is good with children and has been good with the other dogs in her foster home. She has not lived with a kitty before, that we know of, but based on her general demeanor, may be adaptable to a home with cats if the owner is willing to work to transition her to this type of environment. Maggie will benefit from continued socialization and obedience training, so obedience training will be a requirement of her adoption.

Before we sign off, Maggie wanted to tell you, “I have been told that I have a heart of gold and the sweetest disposition. I have a relaxed attitude about life and am happy to just be with you. If you give me a great home I can promise you that I will only repay you with kisses and companionship.”

If our “Spunkiest” girl sounds like she might be a good match for your family, please contact lhouseal@aol.com for more information.

You can also read more about Maggie on her Foster Blog at
http://brooklinelabrescue.org/blog/preparing-for-adoption/maggie-2/

While this Lab may not be available for adoption by the time you complete the adoption process, other great Labs are always finding their way into our Rescue.

If you are interested in adopting this Lab or any other Lab from our Rescue, please visit our Web site, www.brooklinelabrescue.org, for more information on our adoption process.
