Maggie H 25092's Story

Maggie is cleared for adoption. She has some chronic issues that will need to be followed by her adopter.

UPDATE 01/13/26 Maggieis an incredibly sweet and loving dog! Shewas originally picked up by a local HumaneSociety when she was found wandering alone on the streets not once, but twice over a period of several weeks.Maggieis a senior lady who is a bit hard of hearing and struggles with eyesight at night. When she was found, she was significantly underweight and always cowered. It took her a day to meet her foster mom's eyes and to trust that it was safe to accept food. She had extremely advanced dental disease which had been left untreated for several years, causing painful abscesses on most of her teeth. The infection had eaten away a small hole between the roof of her mouth and her nasal cavity. Despite the constant pain she experienced she sought out pets and reassurance and loves cuddles and affection. On November 3rd, Maggie had major dental work done and a benign mass removed from the back of her mouth allowing her to feel much better. She even started to get "old lady zoomies" each morning, racing around the house and wagging her tail so much that she tips herself over!

Maggie is having some house soiling issues so her foster mom keeps her in a diaper a lot of the time, she will continue to need help with potty times. She has been tested for both Cushings and Addisons Disease and both were negative. She also had an abdominal ultrasound which was negative. Per her veterinarian: None of these findings explain why she is drinking excessively or is urinary or fecal incontinent. Maggie has poor rectal tone, meaning the muscles don't contract very strongly. It can be neurodegenerative (meaning the nerves are normal in anatomy, but they don't transmit signals correctly) or compressive (meaning the nerves are getting pinched somewhere, usually in the spinal canal).

Maggie is cheerful and loving. She seeks out pets and reassurance and loves cuddles and affection. Despite all that Maggie has been through she is loving life and ready for her retirement home.

Maggie is one of the gentlest dogs I've ever met. She's very quiet and low energy. She likes short sessions of play followed by long naps and lots of kisses! Maggie would be a perfect companion for someone who is looking for a calm, gentle and loving dog. Her ideal home would have lots of soft blankets and cushions, and no high energy pets or young kids to disrupt her nap time.
