Madison's Story
MADISON – Mexi-Mix / 3 Years / 20kg / F-Spayed

Dear Diary…Madison here with another daily update about my new life in Canada! It’s Day 28 of being in the Great White North and today, I was brave enough to get zoomies in the hallway of my foster parents’ apartment building! It was SO much fun – my tail wagged the whole time and I finally felt like my playful self again. I’ve been a bit on the shy-er side so far, but over the past week, I’ve been feeling less scared, less anxious, and much more comfortable in my surroundings. And I think my foster parents must have noticed because they keep giving me all kinds of treats and getting really excited any time I do ANYTHING. But I love their encouragement and excitement – I feel braver because they’ve been so patient and loving with me.

I’ve found that I really like hanging out with my people and being involved in what’s going on. Sometimes they sit on this thing called a couch and just stare at a bright screen…I don’t know what they’re doing, but I sure like hanging out with them when they’re doing it! I’ve also been told that I’m really good at keeping myself busy: I’m an independent girlie – always have been and always will be. But all that means is that I can entertain myself and that I like my own company! I’m still head over heels for cuddles and affection from my people and love to be with them whenever I can be.

When we go out on walks, I LOVE to sniff everything that I can find. There are just so many new things to smell that I could just wander and sniff all day long. I’m hoping that my forever family will be people who enjoy being outdoors with a curious walking companion – I love being able to just take my time and truly investigate the world around me. And don’t even get me started on other dogs. That’s one thing that’s stayed a constant since coming to Canada: I feel so much more comfortable with dog friends around me. Sometimes I forget that there are other dogs in the world and I feel a bit more anxious when I feel alone. But as soon as I see other dogs, I can feel my bum start to wag and my spirits instantly lift. Sometimes it’s nice to hang out with someone just like you, right?

My foster parents’ keep telling me how proud they are of me and that makes me proud of myself too. My whole life changed and my world shifted when I came to Canada 28 days ago, but I’ve embraced the change and learned to see that I can only go up from here! Canada is full of loving people, friendly dogs, and great stuff to smell. It’s taught me that I love affection from my people, that the world is full of interesting, totally-not-scary things, and that there are so many dogs out there that I haven’t even met yet.

I’ll sign off now, more updates later. For now, this gentle, sweet-natured, and affectionate new Canadian is signing off!

If you think that you and Madison would be a perfect fit, please fill out an application at www.dibsrescue.com. Madison’s adoption fee is $750. If you are a family with kids, please check out our resources on kids and dogs before you apply (https://dibsrescue.com/kids-dogs/).
