Maddie's Story

Maddie is a 14-year-old beagle mix, though you wouldn’t know it by the way she acts—she is full of classic beagle spirit. She’s a bit larger than a typical beagle but embodies the breed through and through. Maddie came to us after her owner passed away at the age of 96. A local kennel where she was staying reached out and asked if we could help her find a comfortable retirement home, and we promised Maddie we would do just that.

Maddie is crate trained, although she will absolutely let you know if she needs to go out. If you don’t listen, she won’t hesitate to pee in her crate—and honestly, we can’t blame her.

Maddie is not suited for a home with cats; her hunting instincts are alive and well. She is great with kids, and she has built a sweet bond with her foster mom’s nieces, ages 3 and 6. She walks wonderfully on leash and does best with a slip lead and treat-based rewards. Maddie is ready for about 5 km of walking a day (with breaks) and loves spending time outside in the yard using her nose. She enjoys hunting, chewing sticks, playing short games with her furry foster siblings, and destroying squeaky toys—followed by a well-earned nap on the couch.

Like many beagles, Maddie is a little too clever when it comes to food. She will locate any and all snacks within reach. She has learned to open cupboards and has helped herself to her foster sister’s kibble more than once. Her forever family must be willing to “Maddie-proof” their home (think baby-proofing). Her foster parents currently use baby locks on low cupboards to keep her safe from off-limits treats.

Now, let’s talk about Maddie and her canine friends.?When introduced to dogs that behave rudely, Maddie isn’t afraid to play the role of grandma and correct them. With dogs that respect her space, she warms up over time and becomes a lovely playmate—she’ll even run and play chase in the yard! Since coming to us, Maddie has lived at Tango’s HQ, with one-dog foster homes, with families hoping to adopt her, and in a second foster home before returning to HQ. She has been in our care for almost two years, and she will only leave HQ for a truly perfect home.

At one point, we adjusted her requirements from “can live with dogs” to “must be an only dog.” Why? Because outside of HQ, she experienced challenges, and we never want her bounced around again. One family even called us within two hours of bringing her home because they weren’t prepared to provide the supervision she needs when settling in with other dogs.

But over the last 10 months, Maddie has been living at HQ with six foster siblings, and her foster mom runs a pet-sitting business—meaning Maddie has had constant, structured exposure to other dogs. With time to settle and feel secure, she has made amazing progress. She now plays with her foster siblings, cuddles with them, and genuinely appreciates their company. Because of her growth, we’re once again open to homes with other dogs, as long as specific guidelines are followed (which we will go over with potential adopters).

Maddie’s Wish List for Her Forever Home
- Plenty of snacks (but not too many—she likes her senior figure!)
- Respectful dog friends… or no other dogs at all
- A family committed to giving her supportive medications in her daily meals (those joints matter!)
- A loving home willing to cherish her, however much time she has left
