Macy's Story

Hi! My name is Macy. As you can see I am a black, silky smooth coated cocker spaniel and I have a lovely, fringed tail that wags almost all the time! That smooth coat makes me pretty low maintenance compared to my curly cousins. My estimated date of birth is 1/5/2021, so I’m about 3 years old and I only weigh 15 pounds!

I was surrendered to the shelter because my owner dropped a Cheeto, which I wanted very much, and when she tried to take it, I snapped at her. She said she was afraid I would do the same with her grandchildren, so, over a single Cheeto I was put in jail! That’s where GCCSR came to my rescue and bailed me out!

Knowing my history, my foster mom was careful and patient with me in the beginning. Due to her consistency and the relationship we’ve developed, she can now easily take a treat from me, pick up my food bowl while I am eating, and even take a ball out of my mouth without fear that I would ever nip at her. After 2-3 weeks in my new house (which adjustment period should be expected of any change of environment), I am housetrained and prefer to go outside, but I do know how to use a puppy pad if the weather is just frightful and you don’t want to take me for a walk.

I am healthy, up to date on all my vaccines and am microchipped. I recently had a cherry eye fixed and am doing great and made a full recovery from that. While I was at the vet, they cleaned my teeth really good and my pearly whites are all set and in excellent shape. I also think I am a very happy or maybe even a “funny” dog. My foster mom laughs at me all the time, and says I am just too cute especially when I just gaze up at her with my big brown eyes. She also calls me sweetheart and sweety pie so I must be almost as sweet as a chocolate bar!

Because GCCSR believes in full disclosure, we need to tell you that at the very beginning in my new home, I did pee submissively. However, we are pleased to report my foster mom has helped me get over that almost completely in a couple of weeks! You can, too, by doing a few simple things, like give me a second to settle down before you touch me and other stuff that you can read about on the internet.

I absolutely love my tennis balls or chuks (those are softer, lighter balls) and will go after it as long as you will keep throwing it for me. It doesn’t matter to me we play inside where I may not see where the ball goes and have to hunt for it, or outside where I can run further… I just want to PLAY PLAY PLAY, and I LOVE to run! I am super fast, amazingly agile, and can even catch the ball in the air. My foster mom thinks I could make a great agility dog if you want to teach me ~ what a great way for us to bond! I’ll do just about anything for a treat (or for my ball). I have learned commands like drop it and sit, and we are working on down now, too. I also come when called, most of the time anyway. Because I’m so smart with so much energy to burn, my foster shares fun mental stimulation game with me. If you decide I’m the girl for you, she can tell you all about them!

Even as energetic as I am, I do love just hanging out with my foster mom. I love it when I sit in her lap and she just pets me and strokes my back. I even fall asleep in her lap, and now that I’m comfortable with her, I also really like a tummy rub. When she’s working, I relax in my own bed in her office, just gazing at her adoringly. I’m fully crate trained and even go there sometimes on my own just to take a break or rest. I can sleep there all night with the gate closed and I am not scared, don’t make noise or bark, and get a really cozy night’s rest. I do also like to go under the bed and sleep and lately, I have even gotten on the bed and slept beside my foster mom. I like the gentle rock of rocking chairs and even got on the big swing out back so I could sit beside my mom. I pretty much just want to be wherever my person is.

I am good with other dogs of all ages. My foster mom says her cocker spaniel, Spencer, is an old man, because he’s about 13 years old and not as fast as me. He tolerates me nicely and never tries to take my ball because he has his own toys, and I don’t try to take those from him. I have learned how to live with him but not bother him, so we get along just fine. At the dog park, I play with all the dogs that are there, but I still prefer just going after my ball. On our daily walks if we encounter another dog, I do like to sniff and see who they are and maybe do a little round and round dance. I am not sure if I like cats or not. When I see one I want to chase it, but of course, that is not allowed so I can’t ever get close enough to know if I like them or not. I will chase squirrels in the yard, too, but can’t get close to them either!

I do great with older kids (GCCSR says that means 10 and older), especially if they will play toss the ball with me. I don’t mind being petted by them as long as they know their manners and know how to give me my space and treat me with respect. And as far as an ideal household for me, unexpected noises like a loud bump against the wall, the icemaker dumping ice, or neighbors making noises, sometimes make me nervous and I will bark. For this reason, it would probably be best that I not live in an apartment setting. I’m definitely more ‘reactive’ to unexpected things when I am ‘protecting’ my home vs. when I’m out on a walk or away from home, but hopefully in time and as I gain confidence, my reactivity there will lessen.

Speaking of walks, when I first went to my new foster home, I was admittedly a bit timid of loud noises, dogs barking that I could not see, or cars zipping past but since my foster mom walks me almost every day, I have overcome most of that timidity. I am still cautious, but I am not afraid anymore. If we approach where people are, I used to be scared, but now I am just curious and will even let them pet me. Fair warning ~ I don’t like it when a stranger comes inside my house and can be a bit barky, but my foster mom just picks me up and lets me know it is all okay, lets me feel safe while I sniff the new person, then I am just fine and even will let them play ball with me.

Car rides were very scary at first, and while I’ve made a lot of progress, I’m still a little nervous, especially on the going away from home part. Now that my foster mom has shown me that sometimes riding in the car means a fun trip to the dog park or to a store, I am getting better. With more practice, in time, I likely won’t be scared at all anymore going or coming.

So that’s a ton about me. Are you looking for a totally sweet, loyal, energetic, lovable little girl like me? I’m a really beautiful little girl, at least that is what everyone says. I’m looking for a beautiful, loving, loyal soul to be my forever person. Is that you? I won’t be around long so get in your application while there is time and if you are the right fit for me and I am for you, we can live happily ever after!

Here’s a link to the adoption application if you think I’m the girl for you!
https://www.gulfcoastcockerspanielrescue.com/2020-adoption-application-captcha.php
