Mack

Meet Mack, a two year old Lab mix who recently found his way to the shelter due to unfortunate circumstances. Mack is a very sweet boy who is always ready for some play time and love! We are still learning about Mack, but his previous owner was kind enough to write up some information on him for us to share.<br/><br/>From Mack's previous owner:<br/>Birthday May 28th, 2023<br/>Mack's first person, my brother in law, passed away unexpectedly and that is how Mack and his sister, Roxy came to live with us from Arizona to Michigan in July 2025. Mack was crate trained as a puppy, so that was helpful with turning him into a Michigan house dog. We have not used a crate with Mack since early September. He only marked inside the house once before he was neutered in August. Since then, he has had zero accidents in the home. He also appears to know the command "sit".<br/>Mack is very polite and does not beg for food or steal it off the counter or table. We were feeding him two cups of dry dog food twice a day, at 8am and 4pm. Some days he would start to whine for his dinner at 3:30pm. He likes many types of vegetables and fruit. He loves to play an enrichment game called "find it". We have him sit and stay, and then hide food around the house. We come back and give him the command "find it" and off he goes. Then we do it again. Words that we use a lot are stay, wait, alright, this way, come here, and okay.<br/>We are older and retired so we could give Mack lots of attention and take him on many walks. It took both of us to deal with his 2 year old activity level. While at the beach (he likes pulling rocks out of the lake) or on walks down our rural road, we have seen Mack be the good dog, every time, even when dealing with an aggressive off leash dog. Six times other dogs have charged him and he just quietly stood his ground, with confidence, the other dogs eventually backed off.<br/>Mack loves running after Chuck-It balls and isn't always good at giving it up once he brings it to you. If you wanted him to get a good run in, I would have another ball and show it to him when he came back. Then I would tell him to "drop it" (the one in his mouth) before I would toss the second ball. He is very playful and would often try to entice his older sister to play.<br/>Mack's only bad habit is wanting to hunt. He will go after squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, raccoons, skunks and porcupines. You will notice that he spends a lot of time sniffing the air. Because of his desire to hunt and chase, is it best to use a front clip harness.<br/>Mack is a very good boy and the only reason we have to put him up for adoption is because, just once, he and I weren't paying attention and he accidently ran in to me and broke my knee, requiring surgery. We were already old, but now I am in the frail category. It is heartbreaking to give Mack up for adoption. He deserves a new family that can meet his exercise needs. He is a loving, joyful, good dog.
