Luna Lou's Story

Luna is a playful, sensitive, and deeply loving girl who has been looking for a home to call her own for far too long! Luna is incredibly affectionate with her favorite humans and wants nothing more than to be near you at all times and involved in whatever it is you’re doing. Apart from spending quality time with her people, Luna’s favorite activities include outdoor adventures (particularly long, sniff-heavy walks, hikes, and anything that involves water); regular cuddle sessions; and tug-of-war.

Luna is fully house-trained, nondestructive, and easy to walk on-leash. She does well in the car and enjoys sticking her head out the window and watching the world slide by outside. She rarely barks at home and is a perfect angel when left alone for several hours at a time. She is also a quick learner and already knows a variety of commands, such as "come," "sit," and "shake." While Luna is fairly energetic and tends to be happiest when she gets regular exercise, she does not have a hyperactive, "bouncing-off-the-walls" level of energy and is perfectly content to spend stretches of the day quietly lounging and/or snuggling with her humans.

While Luna is an adaptable and behaviorally "easy" dog in countless ways, she is also a sensitive soul who struggles with anxiety. For instance, she tends to be fearful of unfamiliar people, particularly male strangers, and would need an adopter who is willing/able to guide her through slow introductions to new people and help her feel safe during these interactions. While Luna typically does not have much of a reaction to female strangers in passing (e.g., while out on walks), she does have some reactivity to male strangers and will bark at them if they walk past in close proximity or approach her. She is generally very receptive to redirection and settles down quickly, but her anxiety around male strangers would require some sensitivity and management. We’ve been working on increasing positive experiences with men and desensitization training with Luna and she’s been doing very well, so we’re hopeful that she’ll be able to build upon this progress in her future home.

Luna has been on a couple of short-term shelter "vacations" during her time at HSHV and has reportedly had trouble bonding with the men in these households; however, while she was initially wary of her current foster dad, she warmed up to him quite quickly and has since developed a very close, affectionate, and trusting relationship with him. Her foster dad was mindful of following her lead and not forcing interactions before she felt safe with him, so our assumption is that she would do well with male household members who are similarly responsive to her needs early on.

Luna is currently living in one of our amazing foster homes! Adopting from foster is easy! Just contact the adoptions desk at 734--662-5585 or email adoptions@hshv.org to set up a vist today!
