Lucky's Story

LUCKY
1-year-old Black Labrador Retriever Mix • Neutered Male • ~50 lbs

Background:
Originally surrendered to Contra Costa County Shelter in April; adopted out, then returned to the shelter system. Currently in foster care and making excellent progress. Lucky is friendly, confident around other dogs, respectful with teens, and likely good with kids and cats. After leaving the shelter, Lucky needed time to settle into a home environment and learn to trust his foster family — which he has done beautifully. He continues to benefit from structure, consistency, confidence building, and positive reinforcement. Another playful dog is strongly preferred.

What Lucky’s Rescue Rep Says:
Lucky is a gentle, sensitive young Lab mix who arrived unsure of the world, but once given stability, patience, and kindness, he has shown how quickly he can settle and connect. He is a sweet boy who deeply wants to bond with his people, and as trust builds, he becomes affectionate, cuddly, and loyal.

Lucky missed out on consistent early-life routines, so he benefits from calm structure and gentle guidance. He is not a turnkey puppy, but he is highly responsive to consistency and positive reinforcement, gaining confidence each day. Once he feels secure, Lucky settles beautifully and wants nothing more than to be close to his people.

Lucky will thrive in a patient, loving home that values steady routines and gentle transitions. He enjoys being close to his humans (especially on the couch), loves food and treats as motivation, and would benefit from continued socialization with dogs — ideally with a confident, playful canine companion. He does well with gentle kids, shows no prey drive with cats, and is continuing to build confidence and leash skills with short, positive walks.

Lucky is highly moldable, and with the right family, he will blossom into an extraordinary adult dog — loyal, affectionate, and deeply connected to his people.

What Lucky’s Foster Says:
Lucky needed time to settle after leaving the shelter and learn to trust — and once given that space, his progress has been remarkable. In just 10 days, Lucky became fully house trained. Having a calm, older resident dog in the home has been incredibly helpful for him. Lucky loves to play with his canine companion and looks to him for cues, confidence, and reassurance. Watching and following the older dog has helped Lucky learn household routines and feel more comfortable more quickly.

Lucky loves food and treats and uses them as motivation to engage, build confidence, and warm up to people. He enjoys affection and seeks out pets and love once he feels safe. His crate is a true safe space — he goes there when he feels unsure, but will happily come out when he’s ready for snacks, treats, attention, and connection.

Lucky is still learning leash-walking skills, but he improves every day with practice and positive reinforcement. He truly just wants to be loved — and to love his humans back. With consistency, patience, and kindness, Lucky settles in beautifully and shows just how sweet and devoted he can be.

Medical:
Lucky is currently neutered and in excellent health.

Located In: San Francisco Bay Area (currently in foster care).

Please email Lucky’s rescue rep, Marie Ross, first with why you feel you would be the best-fitting home at mariedross@att.net, and please include your phone number.
