Louie's Story

Louie has the kindest soul you’ll ever meet—and somehow, it’s still intact. He was found alone at a dusty construction site, waiting beside an empty road for someone who would never come back. Left behind, forgotten, discarded. A vet exam told us more than we wanted to know: an old shotgun wound with buckshot still inside, a bad hip from who-knows-what, and heartworms on top of it all. But Louie isn’t bitter. He’s gentle, quiet, and grateful. He lights up when people talk to him and leans in like he’s been starved for kindness his whole life.

Louie is currently in a loving foster home, where he’s finally experiencing the life he always deserved—good food, a soft bed, gentle hands, and kind voices. He is neutered, up to date on all vaccines, and undergoing heartworm treatment, which will be completed by early September. He also receives monthly arthritis injections to manage an old hip injury.

Because he’s older and sore, Louie may be dog-selective and does not like to be jumped on. While he has demonstrated the ability to get along with other dogs, after everything he’s been through, Its best he be the only dog in a calm home. Louie thrives on human attention—preferring the company of people far more than other animals. He’ll do best with someone who understands big senior dogs and can read the body language of a dog who’s had a hard past but still chooses to love.

Louie doesn’t need much—just love, comfort, and a quiet place to lay his head for the rest of his days. Give him that, and he’ll give you the kind of loyalty only a dog who’s seen the worst and still chooses to trust can offer.

Louie is located in southern Mississippi, but we transport to several cities in the Northeast. For out-of-town adoptions, we can arrange online meet-and-greets via FaceTime, Google Meet, or Facebook Messenger. If you're interested in adopting Louie, please fill out an application at animalaidms.org (link also on the right side of this page). Once your application is reviewed, and if it seems like a good fit, a volunteer will contact you by phone. Please allow a couple of days for this process.
