Lorna 7655's Story

Lorna has been with us since June 2025 and is a young, high-energy dog who is still learning appropriate ways to interact with the world. Like many dogs who haven't had consistent structure early on, Lorna struggles with impulse control and appropriate play, especially when she's excited. That said, recent time spent with her in a calm, structured office environment gave us valuable new insight into who Lorna really is outside of the shelter chaos.

Lorna does have a bite/incident report on file. This means she has either bitten and/or scratched a person in the past. Anyone interacting with her, adopting, or fostering her must be aware of this history.

The challenges (honest truth):

-Extremely high energy with limited impulse control.
-Uses her mouth inappropriately during play, especially grabbing hands, arms, or clothing.
-Jumps very high and into people's faces when excited.
-Not yet housebroken, though she does show signs of understanding by going to the door when she needs to go out.
-Does not willingly enter a crate and will need continued work on positive crate entry.
-Needs continued work on manners with both people and dogs.
-Too rough and energetic for homes with children.

Updated observations from a calmer environment:

-In a quiet office setting, Lorna did not display any resource guarding of food, treats, or toys.
-Extremely toy-motivated and capable of entertaining herself for long periods when given appropriate outlets.
-Destructive behavior was limited to toys only.
-Tug-of-war is her favorite activity; soft or stuffed toys do not last long with her.
-Enjoys being around people but is not a couch potato or cuddle-focused dog - she prefers activity over affection.
-Responds well to verbal correction and clear boundaries.

Dog-to-dog observations:

-Participated in playgroups and did overall well.
-Enjoyed interacting with other dogs but still needs guidance on appropriate play manners.
-Would likely benefit from a playful, tolerant dog who does not become easily annoyed.
-Continued dog-to-dog structure and supervision will be important.

On leash & confinement:

-Walks well and is very manageable on a harness.
-Without a harness, she tends to pull and may grab the leash, but responds quickly to "leave it" or "drop it."
-While she does not choose to enter a crate on her own, once crated she is calm, quiet, and non-reactive.

Why she's worth it:

-Playful, driven, and intelligent with a strong desire to engage.
-Responds to consistency, structure, and clear communication.
-Toy motivation makes training and enrichment highly achievable.
-Given appropriate outlets, she can self-regulate and stay engaged independently.

Who she needs:

Lorna needs an experienced, confident handler who understands high-energy, mouthy dogs and is committed to teaching appropriate play and impulse control. A structured home without children is essential. She may do well with the right dog companion, provided introductions are thoughtful and supervision is consistent.
