Lorena's Story
Meet Lorena!

Say hello to this adorable girl - one of a special group of lucky rescue pups who recently joined our program here in Oregon thanks to our wonderful partners at One Tail at a Time in West Texas.

Lorena and her travel companions are now settling into their temporary foster homes in Oregon, where they're receiving the love, care, and comfort they need as they prepare for their forever families. Sweet, affectionate, and full of curiosity, Lorena is already melting hearts with her gentle spirit and expressive little face.

Like many of the dogs who come to us from all over, Lorena's early story likely involved some uncertainty - whether she was abandoned, born as a stray, or part of an overwhelmed shelter system. What matters most now is that she's safe, supported, and ready for a fresh start with a family who will cherish her.

It's important that Lorena's future home understands that rescue dogs need patience and time to decompress and adjust to new environments, routines, and experiences. As with most rescue pups, continued training, socialization, structure, and plenty of physical and mental enrichment (yes, puppy brain games included!) will be essential to help her grow into the confident, happy companion she's meant to be.

We're still getting to know her personality as she settles in, so stay tuned for updated photos and more insights! One thing's for certain: this sweet girl is ready to begin her new adventure and will bring so much love and joy to a very lucky home.

Lorena is ready for her next chapter - one filled with comfort, play, adventure, and a family to call her own. Could that be with you?

Shelter notes:

Lorena is a reserved girl but loves attention. She is doing fantastic with her leash training. Lorena has gone on a few field trips, including to our adoption center. She rides well in the car and did well with children ranging from toddlers to middle school students. At our adoption center, Lorena was introduced to her new favorite thing: a soft bed. Not one for being rowdy, she curled up and took a good nap. At the dog park, she played well with other dogs but is also just fine if it is only humans. Lorena is not kennel reactive to other dogs in the shelter passing by her kennel. She is always tail wags and down for a good run and long nap afterwards. We do not have cats at the shelter at this time, but Lorena lived outside in a cat heavy neighborhood for the first 4 months of her life with no reported issues. She seems like the most tolerant girl of other animals.

If you've been thinking about adding a new furry friend to your life, don't wait! Submit your adoption application today for a chance to meet Lorena, start a flexible 3-7 day in-home adoption trial, and maybe even welcome this precious girl into your family for good.

Could Lorena be your next loyal companion? THEREFORE, MEET AND GREETS ARE NOT DONE AT OUR FACILITY. TO LEARN MORE, PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR ADOPTION APPLICATION ONLINE AND OUR ADOPTION PROGRAM MANAGER WILL REACH OUT TO YOU WITH FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO MEET YOUR NEW PUP!)

The first step to adopting a dog from SDH is to complete the adoption application. First click on the "OUR DOGS tab up above, and then click on the orange colored "Fill out an Adoption Application here" button to start the process). Once submitted, please expect 3-5 business days or sooner for processing and to hear back from us. Once you are pre-approved, your adoption application will remain on file with us for 1 year and it can go towards multiple adoptions within that 1 year time frame before it expires.

To finalize an adoption you must sign the adoption contract and pay the full adoption fee. The adoption fee helps cover our costs. On average, per dog, it costs SDH between $500-$700 for vetting/medical/sterilization, transport and other rescue related expenses. All dogs are rescued and do not transport to SDH until they are healthy and ready to be adopted. All dogs are examined by a veterinarian before they fly, which includes sterilization whenever possible, given standard vaccines and rabies (if age appropriate). Most dogs are sterilized before they come into our program, however if this is not the case we will spay/neuter them once they arrive at our cost.

Upon their arrival, all dogs are seen for a wellness exam by SDH's medical team. Once the adoption is finalized, any further medical care or treatment will not be covered by SDH, unless discussed prior with our medical team. All known issues are disclosed to the best of our ability prior to finalizing the adoption.
