Little Man's Story

Tiny, cute, and quirky! This goofball is shy with strangers and takes some time to warm up, but is worth the wait.

Meet Little Man: an 11 lb Toy Aussie who is just as lovable as he is odd.

This 7 year old was rescued from a puppy mill, along with over 420 other neglected dogs. He was kept in a small, concrete pen his whole life, and for the first time ever, is learning how to be a dog. Everything is new: Wearing a collar (let alone walk on a leash), living indoors, or being pet.

Despite this all, he is doing his best to take on these new experiences with gusto. He may be timid, but he regularly tests his comfort zone and builds new skills every day. He now loves going for leashed walks, and is learning a lot by observing his friend Frankie (another Mini Aussie from the same puppy mill). When Frankie reaches a new socialization milestone, it's just a matter of time Little Man will follow suit.

When Little Man first came into the rescue, our presence in the room alone would cause him to have full-body tremors in fear. He is now at the point where he'll dance around the room excitedly and sneak up to you for sniffs, before darting away. He is still scared of human hands, but will eat from your palm and is piecing together that he likes his booty scratched.

He plays with the other puppy mill dogs (many of which are intact males), and is quite tolerant of their antics. He started offering play bows and wrestling with them, which is new. Every day he makes little changes, showing he is feeling more comfortable in his new world.

That being said, he has some ways to go before he's a "normal" dog. He is a work in progress, and looking for someone willing to invest the time he needs to shine: Someone who is regularly home and can make themselves present around the house. A confident dog he can model after and seek companionship from would be beneficial for him. He has not been introduced to cats yet.

He had 15... yes, FIFTEEN, teeth pulled due to severe dental disease and neglect. And 9 had fallen out completely on their own prior to us rescuing him. He can still have kibble/hard foods (and is quite passionate about dinner time... this boy can eat!), but his tongue sometimes pokes out of his mouth. For now it's cute and mostly cosmetic, but his adopters would have to keep on top of his dental health longterm, to ensure he can keep the teeth he has left.

Little Man would do best in a mature, quiet, patient home without young kids. He's not aggressive, but the commotion of a bustling home with children would overwhelm him.

He might be small and flashy-looking, but please only apply if you are serious, and understand she will need love, patience, and training to live up to his full potential. He did come from a puppy mill as a disposable breeder dog, living outdoors in appalling conditions, and came to us with a very matted coat. We trimmed out his mats and had her professionally groomed several times, but his coat will continue to need more maintenance and is still growing in, in some areas.

We do accept out of state applications, but adopters are responsible for expenses related to transport. We adopt to the US (including Hawaii) and Canada. He is currently in Austin, Tx and needs a local foster if you cannot adopt.

To see more videos of Little Man, follow us on Instagram @herdinghomerescue

To apply to adopt Little Man, apply via our website, HerdingHomeRescue.com/adopt

NOTE: We only accept inquiries via our website, NOT Petfinder.
