Lily's Story

An update from Lily's foster ?? Please SHARE.
My Foster Lily Elizabeth ? Lily has been through a lot and instability causes her anxiety, but she is so incredibly loving and so resilient. In the right home, Lily will be an amazing dog. I even think she could be a service animal if it wasn’t for having to go to public places. Anxious Lily is challenging, but secure happy Lily is a gift. So, what does Lily need in her forever home to be secure and happy? She requires consistency, security and most importantly she must trust you. We all know trust takes time so what Lily needs most is a loving, patient person who will give her the time she needs to trust them. She needs to feel secure. This means her person needs to be secure and let Lily know she is safe with them. Her person needs to be the alpha. My first weeks with Lily were work. I had to let her know she was not in charge, BUT she was loved and safe. This is a careful balance. Once this is established, she is committed to you. Lily is incredibly loving and loyal to her person. I have had Lily for about 1 month. The progress she has made in this time is nothing short of amazing. She is almost completely off of her medication. She has had no need for gabapentin, but fireworks or thunder may make that necessary depending on her situation at the time. She is no longer afraid of the dark. She will go on walks without freezing. She does not bark at my dogs when she sees them and has gone on walks with them. She does not resource guard with me at all. I can take anything at any time. I can sit in her bed. I can take her food. But this is only with me. The men in our home are working on their relationships and it has improved, but I do not know that they would be able to interact the same way at any time because she is just inherently nervous with men. I do believe Lily can be as good with her adopter as she is with me. That said when moving from my home to the adopters she will need transition time. Lily would do best with a quiet home; a single woman or couple. I do not think a home with children is a good fit unless it is someone who really understands and is able to separate and supervise the way we do here. As far as other pets I do believe she can get there, but I also think it will take more time than most are willing to give and experience many do not have. I know that Lily has challenges and restrictions, but there is also something amazingly special about her.
If you would like to adopt Lily, please visit our website linktr.ee/onelovedogrescue to download an application or email us at adopt@onelovedogrescue.org
