Lilly's Story

Hi everyone, I'm Lily! My journey began at the shelter, where I spent six days with my littermates before I even learned my shelter name. It was a scary place for us—four puppies found together in a field. Two of my siblings were adopted right away, but Sandy and I were sent to ShepHeroes because we were shy and needed the guiding hand of shepherd-savvy people, and a quieter place to settle while the shelter made room for new dogs.

I'm a big pup at 25 lbs—curious, happy, and loving when I forget to worry. I need a little more time to adjust to new things than Sandy does. Thankfully, the shelter staff and rescue volunteers were incredibly kind and helped us get safely to Sacramento. We even spent a night at a volunteer's house between rides—a huge change after the shelter's chaos and so many new experiences. During the long car rides, Sandy and I stuck together, comforting each other along the way. We nearly flew to our new foster homes, but foggy weather changed the plans. Everyone just wanted us to be settled before the holidays.

When we arrived in Sacramento, another volunteer welcomed us into her home and showed us we were finally safe—no more living outdoors. She made a trail of kibble to help us feel brave enough to come inside easily, and Sandy was all for this food adventure. I took a bit longer because I'm more sensitive and always worry for both Sandy and me, but soon we were both exploring and learning to relax. In just over a day, we were going in and out of the house on our own and didn't need to stick together all the time anymore.

We were spayed at the shelter, so our first foster mom made sure we got lots of rest and naps to heal quickly. Sleeping in a warm, quiet house is just the best feeling. And our foster mom tried out a couple of different bows for my Holiday photo. Are you leaning towards a red or a green bow?

I love toys and have been trying out all the new ones. Sometimes, I get so excited that I tug on human clothes, especially the first time we met the resident shepherds who wanted us to play. Sandy and I headed to different foster homes after a few days in our first foster home, each of us ready to start finding a family of our own. And allowing each of our personalities to shine. If you look at our early photos, you'll see me leaning on Sandy, but she finds comfort in those roles, too. One of the first nights, Sandy was a pest, wanting to play when the lights were out in our shared crate, and I got really grumpy. Our foster mom offered me the pen in the same room, and I fell soundly asleep right away. In the morning, I heard Sandy caused quite a ruckus and needed lots of consoling while I ignored her—a girl needs her sleep!

I've been settled in my new foster home, which I share with two smaller dogs and cats. The cats are hanging out in a room because a grandkid is allergic to them, so I don't see the cats as often. I've been mastering household rules, solidifying potty training, and going for car rides to pick up smaller family members from school. The grandkids and grandnephews are all awesome and love shepherds.

My foster family is supporting me as I learn all about the wider world, where I'm growing braver. I love cuddles, praise, and of course, treats. I'm a solid gal who likes to observe things before leaping into action.

By the way, we're going to be big girls when we grow up—and just like most shepherds, we'll probably be full of playful mischief!

Have you visited our YouTube channel yet? We'd love your support—please subscribe, like, and comment on our videos to help our adoptable shepherds shine! You can also follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and our newest Threadsaccount for even more heartwarming news and updates about our shepherds.

As a foster-based rescue, ShepHeroes is always looking for new fosters to join our caring community.
