Leonardo's Story

Are you ready to meet your one and only "Man's best friend"? Come on by and say hi to Leonardo! Leo is a very affectionate boy, and smart as a whip. Leo does have to be the only dog, but trust us when we say he has the affection to make up for it. Leo is a lover and has never met a stranger! He'd love to be at your side and with you every step of the way. He has lived with both cats and kids in the past, and done great with both! He's currently working on regrowing his hair from an allergy breakout, and getting more handsome by the day. Don't hesitate to stop in and say hello to him!<br/><br/>Leonardo is a STAFF FAVORITE pet! Here's what our Volunteer Coordinator, Sarah, has to say about him:<br/><br/>"Have you ever met a dog who just instantly brightens your day with their wiggly butt and big, slobbery smile? The feeling is unmatched, and that's exactly the vibe Leonardo, or "Leo" for short, brings to the table!<br/><br/>Leo has become my unofficial "teaching assistant" (he really does most of the work) while training new dog walking volunteers and joins me at almost every training session. During this time, I have learned that, not only is Leo incredibly fun to be around, but also that he is incredibly smart, treat-motivated, and loves meeting new people! No matter the size of the group, Leo will enthusiastically prance right up to each volunteer and introduce himself, sitting patiently for a treat and a pat.<br/><br/>He's a master at "Sit" and "Down", which can be a tough cue for dogs to learn, and he continues to pick up new skills every day with support from our staff and volunteers. Leo is an energetic guy, but he has learned to sit to say "please," and he keeps making great progress daily as he works on his basic manners.<br/><br/>If you are looking for a dog who is smart, fun, and people-oriented, Leo just may be the guy for you!"

Champaign County Humane Society's Adoption Policy
The first step toward adoption is coming to the shelter to meet the animals. Once you have decided on an animal you would like to adopt, you will be asked to fill out an adoption application followed by a brief interview with one of our adoption counselors. If you prefer to fill out an Adoption Application online ahead of time, please visit the CCHS website. While submitting an application online will save some time during your visit to the shelter, submitting an application online does not place a "hold" on an animal, nor is it a guarantee of adoption. It generally takes 24-72 hours for the adoption staff to complete processing applications, so we do not send animals home the same day. MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS: CCHS accepts up to three applications per pet and priority for adoption is given to the first family to submit an application. If interested in a specific animal, we recommend calling the shelter prior to your visit for more information on their status. Please bring a valid photo ID with you for your visit to the shelter. You must be at least 18 years of age to adopt from CCHS. Hours for Adoptions: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday: 2:00 PM – 7:00 PM Saturday and Sunday: 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM The shelter is closed on Tuesdays and major holidays.
