Leila's Story

AN INQUIRY FROM PETFINDER IS NOT AN APPLICATION! READ THE ENTIRE POST FOR INFORMATION HOW TO APPLY.

Meet Leila! Leila is a 1 year old female shih tzu/poodle mix and she weighs about 18 pounds. Leila arrived i n rescue when her previous family could no longer care for her. Her foster mom says: Leila (AKA Ellie) is the perfect mix of sweet and athletic. She is loving and thrives on attention, petting, and cuddles--and makes sure to give everyone in the household equal time. But she’s also a ball of energy and loves walks, exploring, and racing around the yard and house. She can be overenthusiastic and clumsy, so her cuddles often come on as body slams, and she’s still learning what is okay to chew on and how to greet people without jumping. She’s very empathetic and sensitive to vocal suggestions and corrections. She doesn’t know commands yet other than “sit” but is food motivated and attentive and enjoys trying to figure things out, so she’s likely to pick them up fast. She’s a shadow dog and wants to be as close to her people as possible (including in the bed and inside the shower curtain), so it would be best if they were around more often than not or could take her along with them. When left alone, she can be distracted with a Kong, but once she’s finished, she barks and howls for about half an hour before settling down by the door to wait, so no shared walls for this girlie in her forever home. She gets along well with dogs her size and smaller (big dogs are on a case-by-case basis) and would LOVE a playmate who matches her energy. She has no problem sharing toys and food. Unfortunately, she can be a pest to lower-energy dogs. She was fine with one chill cat after getting a chance to sniff it but was too excited to make friends before that, and she chases rabbits, birds, lizards, and more like it’s her job, so smaller pets probably aren’t good companions. She’s not suitable for households with younger children, because she is mouthy and wild while playing and could knock down even an adult if she got the right angle. She is housebroken on a schedule and generally quiet but has a guard-dog bark. It takes her a little while to get used to the regular noises of a home, so she’s talkative until she settles in but will look to you for guidance.

Leila is spayed, up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative and microchipped.

Leila is fostered in the Orlando area and her adoption donation is $475. If you are interested in applying to adopt Leila, please visit www.floridalittledogrescue.com to read the adoption process and complete an application! Please note that emails simply asking "Is this dog available" will not be returned, as applications are worked in the order received and availability largely depends on when you apply:) Please also know we do not adopt out of state! Thank you!
