Leela Australian Shepherd Edmond, OK

Leela was brought into the Woodward Animal Shelter as a stray, likely after being dumped. She waited for days and her owners never came. We brought her into our program March of 2024. Leela is a double merle Australian Shepherd.

What is a double merle?
A double merle is created when two merle dogs are bred together. It doesn’t matter what color merle or what breed they are. If two merle dogs are bred together, each puppy in the litter has a 25% chance of being born a double merle. A double merle inherits the merle gene twice. One copy of the merle gene causes a marbling effect on the coat and creates lighter spots throughout the solid color coat. The lack of pigmentation can cause hearing and vision issues.

Thankfully, Leela is a lucky double merle. She seems to not have hearing issues and has a minor vision impairment. She has no problem with recall and after mapping out her space, she can guide herself around with ease.

Leela will do best with a companion in the home. I'd prefer her to go to a home with another Aussie. She needs a companion in which she can follow around, Aussies tend to be more tolerable of the herding as it's in their nature.

Leela is a lover-girl. 100% sweetheart, not a mean bone in her body. She will melt when you touch her and she will kiss you until the end of time. She would be an amazing emotional support animal. Often-times dogs with her temperament that are adopted from our rescue are registered service dogs, helping emotionally support people in hospitals, schools and the workplace.
