Leela's Story

Leela was a neglect case that broke our hearts. She was essentially abandoned in a backyard only accompanied for a few moments each day to put food in her bowl. She was tied to a tiny plastic igloo much of the time. When we met her the owners wouldn't even touch her. She was caked with filth her hair matted and her skin infected.
Leela has blossomed into such a wonderful companion. She appears to be a Maltese mix. She is about six-years-old. She is good with other dogs. It is sad that she is so social because it highlights just how lonely she must have been in that yard. Leela would love to have her humans home all day long. She thrives with attention. She experiences some separation anxiety when her human leaves and barks. The barking has improved.
Leela has not done well at the groomer. She needs an owner who can do maintenance to keep her fur from becoming matted. She tolerates brushing and does well with owner trimming a bit at a time. Our groomer was able to groom her twice so far, but she stopped when Leela hit her limit and was bitey. It is clear that the more trust is built the better Leela does. Leela allows her foster to handle her, carry her, cuddle her and love on her no problem. She also did well handled at the vet.

To meet Leela please fill out an adoption interest form at www.ourneighborhoodpetproject.org
