Kuma's Story
World, meet Kuma — a 1-year-old Cane Corso mix with a heart as big as her paws.? Kuma joined us in June 2025 from a local shelter after finding herself in a medical crisis. Although she was doing relatively well in the shelter environment, she suddenly developed a growth on her leg. As if that wasn’t concerning enough, Kuma attempted to “fix” the problem herself and ended up eating the growth, leaving a significant portion of her hind foot degloved and exposed. She needed bandage changes every 48 hours, daily medication, and a calm, consistent environment to heal — and that’s where our amazing foster team stepped in.

Kuma is one of our lucky pups who has benefited from an incredible foster experience. Her first foster family had her for roughly four months, helped her recover from her injury, and even provided a complimentary board-and-train program! Her foster mom is a trainer we work closely with and was able to give Kuma a full training package, including completing her off-leash training. Thanks to them, so many possibilities have opened up for this lovely girl.

Kuma is now with her long-term foster family — and to make things even better, they’re also dog trainers! She gets to go to work every day with her foster mom, where she trains, works, adventures, and plays with lots of canine friends. Kuma is wonderful with other dogs, so her days are filled with joy and social time. At home, she lives with dogs, cats, and multiple adults, and she coexists beautifully with everyone.

Kuma’s biggest remaining challenge is her crate manners. She has been working hard since coming into our care, but she does still struggle sometimes. She’s incredibly smart, so we know she’ll get there with continued practice. She will, however, need a family who either works from home in a detached house, can continue bringing her to structured daycare, or is committed to ongoing crate training using a crate designed for escape-prone pups.
Like many Corsos, Kuma can be a bit skeptical of new people at first. She tends to be aloof during initial introductions, but with a little space, patience, and the help of some treats, she warms up quickly and sweetly.

This young lady is truly as sweet as they come and is ready to find her forever adventure buddies. She’d love a home with both canine and feline friends, or one where she can soak up all the attention herself. A family with mastiff experience would be ideal, but we’re absolutely open to families willing to work with us and a trainer to ensure all her progress continues.
