Kiya's Story

Boxer mix | 55lbs | Female | ~4 years old | No dogs | No cats | Kids 16+ | Medium Energy | Crate trained | Fostered in Barrie, ON

Vetting: Sciatica, Mild hip dysplasia

Adoption fee: $600

Kiya is the life of the party!

Kiya came to us through Oshawa Animal Services in March of 2023. She did not cope well with the shelter environment, and her mental health began to deteriorate. Due to extreme overstimulation and anxiety, she started showing the shelter staff some undesirable behaviours, and it was clear she needed a different environment.

Kiya was transferred to Correct Canine, where she was finally able to decompress in a structured, calm setting. It was there that she began to flourish and show what she was truly capable of. The staff at Oshawa Animal Services did everything they could to keep her safe, but some dogs, like Kiya, just cannot handle the stress of a kennel. We’re grateful they gave her the opportunity for her true colours to shine.

Kiya is crate trained and house trained. In the past, she struggled with barking to get out of her crate, but with routine and consistency, she has learned that her crate is a cozy, calm place. She has maintained this for the past year and a half, including through a move with her foster home. Kiya is happy to nap the work day away in her crate until her people come home. As with any dog, regression can occur if structure and proper fulfilment aren’t kept up, so consistency will be important in her forever home.

Kiya has worked incredibly hard on her leash manners, going from pulling like an anxious freight train to being an absolute rockstar loose-leash walker (arguably the best in the rescue… don’t tell the others!). She has even earned off-leash freedom through e-collar training and loves exploring trails and playing fetch.

Kiya’s ideal day involves snuggling under the covers with her people, a leisurely stroll around the block, breakfast, then a cozy nap. She loves an off-leash forest walk where she can sniff to her heart’s content and chew on every stick she can find. After; more naps, maybe a game of fetch, dinner, and then couch cuddles to end the day.

Medical & Ongoing Care
- Kiya lives with anxiety, which is well managed with Fluoxetine (about $40/month).
- She also has mild hip dysplasia, managed with Gabapentin (about $15/month) and balanced exercise.
- To prevent urinary crystals, she eats a prescription urinary diet (about $140/month).

Altogether, her ongoing care is approximately $195/month, and it makes all the difference in keeping her happy, comfortable, and confident.

Dog Social Needs

Kiya thrives as the only dog in the home. She is excellent out and about with other dogs, she enjoys tandem walks and doesn’t mind other dogs existing near her. But, she does not like dogs in her face or invading her space. With her bubble respected, she is pure love: loyal, goofy, and full of boxer wiggle-butt joy.

What Kiya’s foster mom would like you to know:
“Kiya is a medium energy girl who’s the perfect mix of couch potato and adventure buddy. She needs someone who understands her anxieties, can guide her through stressors, and will continue building her confidence. She would truly thrive with a family committed to continuing her training and embracing everything she has to offer.

One on one, Kiya is her absolute best self. She bonded quickly and deeply with me, and I adore her. Any ‘bad behaviours’ she once had are completely overshadowed by her many good girl tendencies. She is sweet, yet spicy, and I hope she never has to change that.

I hope she finds her perfect people, those who are just as sweet and spicy as she is and who can help her continue to grow into the incredible dog I know she can be. She deserves the heck out of it.”

Her Adoption Fee Includes:
- Up-to-date vaccines and preventatives
- An E-Collar Technologies e-collar and training tools
- 3 professional training sessions with an approved trainer in your area
- 2 months of food and medication to help her settle in
