Kiera's Story
Did Keira’s adorable floppy ear catch your attention? I hope so! Keira is a 10-year-old female German Shepherd dog (DNA test agrees!) weighing around 80 pounds. Keira was picked up as a stray and brought to animal control emaciated and missing fur. During her transfer into rescue, a microchip was found, and the owners on file indicated they were not interested in getting her back. This was a blessing in disguise for this senior gal who has been thriving in her foster home regaining weight, health, and happiness. She is now seeking a loving home!

Let’s not sugar-coat it- Keira has noticeable hip issues. Given her age, surgery isn’t recommended, so it’s all about making her comfortable. As a result, she is seeking a home that ideally doesn’t have a lot of stairs. She sometimes slips or does the splits, and she drags her foot when she walks. But she really tries to not let this get her down, and she finds ways to still do dog things ,even if she looks a little quirky doing it. She can still play ball (her favorite activity) like a champ!

Keira is not dog-friendly. She has noticeable reactions when seeing a dog. If on leash, that includes pulling and barking. If the blinds are open and a dog walks by, she will bark in the window. She can be very strong in these moments and requires a walker who can hold on tight. Walks at less popular hours are ideal. Her home should have a privacy style fence to avoid her seeing and reacting to neighbor dogs. In her foster home, she loves having a backyard for ball time, but when a neighbor dog comes outside, she is brought inside to avoid interactions under the fence. Hence, her ideal home would not be in an urban environment and would hopefully have minimal dog interactions nearby.

In the house, Keira is well-behaved. She is house-trained and crate-trained. Her fosters crate her when she’s left alone, and she has been tested uncrated periodically with no issues. She is a great companion, bonding deeply with her people and looking deep into your eyes when you pet her. Thunder and construction did not affect her, and car rides have been fine as well. She is a great work/hobby/tv buddy, settling for naps for hours while you get stuff done.

Keira takes a daily pain medication for her hips, so she’ll need periodic blood tests to check on her organ health. Her ear is floppy due to an oldhematoma, which may require occasional ear cleaning/solution for comfort. She takes a daily joint supplement. Her teeth appear to be in good shape for a senior, and she even enjoys crunchy treats.

When meeting new people, Keira generally does well and may occasionally bark at an unexpected stranger. An environment with adults would likely be the best for her. In the home especially, Keira often puts herself in her crate and seemingly waits for you to remember she’s there. Hence, a home that advocates for her would be ideal. Keira is treat-motivated, knows sit/paw/down, responds to directions, and will wait for her leash.

Keira is a sweet soul and so deserving of happy and healthy senior years. She would love to play ball in the yard, go for a few short walks, relish in your companionship, and benefit from your patience. If interested in Keira, apply at www.gsrescue1.org
