Keller's Story

Keller is available for sponsorship only, see our Sponsor Program information at http://animalrefugecenter.org/services/sponsor-program/

Keller is 4 year old pittie who was found roaming the streets in Owensboro and was picked up by animal control. While in their shelter he was a handful to say the least, as he is not only very young, but also deaf. Since coming to ARC, staff has been working on teaching Keller how to communicate using basic hand signs and leash cues. Working with Keller and his unique needs have been a learning experience for the ARC staff, as we are by no means skilled in advance dog training. Despite our shortfalls, Keller has shown us that he is a very intelligent dog. He has learned to "sit" and is slowly learning signs for "off", "wait", and "leave it".

Keller does very well with other dogs at ARC and is currently best buds with Hank. Keller getting better about on a harness but is easily distracted by the sights around him, through frequent walks in known and new places, he is showing improvement.

Keller is a very happy guy and is so eager to please. He is very treat motivated, and this has allowed him to take on a number of adventures, like hikes, car rides, and trips to the park! Keller would thrive with having training from a professional or just someone who can do one on one with him on a regular and frequent basis.

Above all, he is a really great dog with personality that goes for miles. He is looking for someone with the patience, time and resources to help him blossom in his silent world.

Keller would do best with a dog of his own energy level, and who is relatively submissive. Due to his size and excitement level, a home with older children and no cats would be best.

Keller is marked as not housetrained because to our knowledge, he has spent all of his life either as a stray or at our facility, which consists of outdoor dog kennels. He will definitely need some house training, to include home manners.

Animal Refuge Center Inc.'s Adoption Policy
The Animal Refuge Center screens all prospective pet adopters before adoption. Adopters must be prepared to provide references in order for an application to be approved. We ask for a veterinarian reference for current or past pets and we inquire as to your responsibility in keeping up with spay, neuter, vaccinations and other prevention. It will make the process faster and smoother if you ensure the information provided is accurate. Adopters must be 18 years of age or older, have a valid ID, have a phone and be responsive. Adopters must be able to financially and emotionally provide the appropriate daily care, as well as required vet visits for regular check ups and in the case of illness or injury. Adopters who rent or lease their homes must have approval from landlords or property managers to bring a new pet into the home. No gift adoptions. The primary guardian must be present for the adoption and must agree to the terms of the adoption by signing the adoption contract. Incomplete or inaccurate applications are subject to disapproval for that reason alone. Pets are family members and deserve the same respect, planning and care as any other member of a home. Please be sure you and your family are ready to commit to a pet for their entire life (up to 20+ years), including difficult times, moving, a break up, etc. We understand that life happens, but it is important to know that animals surrendered to us and other rescues/shelters are scared and confused, and they can become very depressed and sick. When you adopt you are responsible for their health and wellbeing, do right by them and they will do right by you!
