Kala's Story
Kala is a Golden Retriever/Heeler mix who came into rescue when her owners realized that the needs of a puppy were more than they could afford. She is estimated to be about four months old. True to the Heeler breed, she does have energy and likes to herd so she will need an active family without young kids (under the age of ten) who will be prepared to keep her exercised and stimulated. She's very sweet and playful and would likely love to have another playful pup in the home to play with. She has not been around cats but, due to her herding nature, we would assume she might be best in a home without cats. Her adopters will need to be prepared to give her daily exercise, play time, and training and stimulation. She is here in Maine, in foster, and her foster says:

"Kala is a lovely little girl. 99% of the time she is so sweet. She is curious but has yet to get into anything. She listens very well to “come here” and “let’s go!” She has only had 2 accidents inside because we missed the quick queues but that’s nothing compared to her going outside nearly 47 times already ?.
She sleeps through the night, in the crate, with a sheet covering it, without a peep from 10pm-630am. We do have a sound machine that plays so I bet that helps too. She’s a Velcro dog so far. Just wants to be near or on top of us but also has no problem just laying in her bed alone. She sits so pretty. When it comes to food she is quite feisty. We have been working on kibbles in the hands at meal time which is honestly helping so much. She is learning patience and to sit each time too. The 1% is when the little piranha surfaces and she enjoys trying to firmly nibble on your whole body because she’s excited. We are working on strategies to redirect her. She has respected our other dog Halli, who can often be possessive about her toys and bed. After many many attempts to lay with Halli, she was finally able to get closer and closer and eventually laid on the bed with Halli. We really like her. She’s been super sweet!"

If you think you might be interested in adopting Kala or just want to get pre-approved to adopt through us, please fill out an application on our website.
