Joey's Story
Hi. Hello. It’s me. Joey.
Yes, that Joey — the one with the face that makes people stop mid-sentence and say, “Oh my gosh, LOOK at his eyes.”
Those are my puppy-dog eyes. I didn’t choose them. I just came this way.

I’m a 1.5-year-old, 90-pound masterpiece of pure handsomeness. Think “big, gorgeous boy” with a soft heart and a brain that’s still figuring out the world. I may look like I’ve got it all together (and honestly, I do look incredible), but I’m a sensitive soul underneath these muscles.

I came in as a stray, so my backstory is a bit of a mystery. What I can tell you is that new situations can make me nervous — especially when I feel trapped or unsure, like in my kennel. When I’m scared, I might bark, lunge, or growl to say, “Hey, I need space!” It’s not personal. It’s just my way of protecting myself.

Now here’s the plot twist: once I’m out of the kennel and have a little room to breathe? I’m a totally different guy. I can meet new people calmly, walk nicely on leash, follow cues, and show off my charming, social side. Turns out confidence looks great on me too.

On walks, I do pretty well! I don’t care about cars or bikes (vroom vroom, whatever), and I usually walk like a gentleman. Sometimes I might pull a bit — especially if I spot people or other dogs — but calm, structured walks with space help me feel safe and successful.

Speaking of dogs… I’m a bit selective. Think “small inner circle.” I can react to some dogs on leash, especially if things feel chaotic or if another dog reacts to me first. That said, I’ve done well on controlled group walks and can settle nicely when introductions are slow and structured. I’d probably be happiest as your one-and-only canine companion, soaking up all your love like the superstar I am.

Kids-wise, I’d prefer a home with teens 16+ who understand boundaries and can help keep things calm and predictable. I do best when people let me decide when I’m ready to say hello.

What I’m really looking for is a patient, kind human who believes in me. Someone who will let me build trust at my own pace, keep routines predictable, and use positive reinforcement to help me grow more confident. Bonus points if you enjoy playing with soft toys or rope toys — those are my jam.

I may need a little extra understanding, but I promise I’ll give you my whole heart in return. And honestly… have you seen my face?

I am in the special paws program here at the GTHS because to keep these good looks I need a special diet and some medication that keeps my skin glowing and my gorgeous eyes shining! My special paws adoption fee is $100 and includes my spay/neuter, up to date vaccinations, dewormer and a microchip. If you want to learn more about me, please come visit the GTHS and speak with one of the amazing Adoption Counsellors! The GTHS is open for adoptions from 12pm-4:00pm, every single day of the week and they would be thrilled to introduce you to me! I can't wait to meet you and am looking forward to starting my new life with my new family!

Happy Tail Wags,

Joey
