Jewel's Story

Pet Location: Wayside Waifs main campus

My Friends at Wayside say:
- I am a graduate of LIFT University. In this program, I learned to build confidence and manage my energy. My adoption comes with a free 30-minute private training session.
- I have a lot of energy and need an active adopter!
- During my time at Wayside, I have enjoyed being around other dogs.
- New people and things make me a little nervous. Let’s take things slow!
- I am eligible for a Slumber Pawty, a 7-10 day in-home trial period. Please visit our website for additional information.

My home needs are:
- I must go to a home that already has another dog so they can show me the ropes.
- I need a home with kids 6 years old and older since I tend to be nervous around new people and loud noises.
- A fenced yard is a must for me! I need a secure area to go out for potty breaks.
- It's recommended I go home to a quiet home environment.

Special Request from Jewel: For my safety, I need to go home on an anti-slip collar called a martingale collar. For your convenience, we sell them in our retail store, Whiskers and Wags.

Check out my super cool new video! Scroll through my photos to watch it.

Hi there, I’m Jewel! I’m playful and friendly and super sweet. There’s still so much about life that I have yet to figure out, though, so much for me to experience for the very first time. I just never had the chance to be a normal puppy with all the fun and silliness that goes along with that, so I’m making up for lost time now. I hope that maybe you’d like to join me on my journey. I’d love to be part of your family!

I’m a darling, 10-month-old, 34-pound bundle of fun, with gentle eyes, a bright smile, the cutest little face, and a spunky, delightful personality. I’m not fully housebroken yet, but I’m working on it and making progress every day! If you stay patient with me and keep me on a schedule, it will help to set me up for success. These things just take time when you’ve spent your whole life in a shelter. I was transferred to Wayside from a rural, overcrowded shelter in Arkansas, where I had lived my whole life. There were so many dogs there, we had limited resources, and very little human contact. Coming to Kansas City was exciting yet scary and stressful at the same time. I was so happy when I had the opportunity to go to a loving foster home as I wait for you to find me. I’m still learning, but life is incredibly good!

Everything about living in a home was new and strange to me, so my foster parents have stayed very patient with me, letting me go at my own pace as I settle in, and praising me when I’m a good girl. I love having a routine that I can count on. I’m very well behaved in the house, especially for an inexperienced pup, and I can be trusted to roam free even on the occasion when no one is home. Foster Mom keeps plenty of my toys around to keep me occupied. My toys bring me comfort and make me happy. At night, I peacefully sleep on the couch. This is a luxury that I’ve never experienced before and that I will never take for granted.

Bonding and connecting with people are new to me, but I’m getting the hang of it quickly. I don’t really like to cuddle, but I show affection in my own way and time. Foster Mom assures me that that’s okay, which helps to put me at ease. I get so excited when she comes home, happily greeting her with a smile and a wag of my tail. I’m friendly and happy when visitors stop by, too. One of my favorite things is to curl up under a soft blanket and roll around in pure contentment and joy. I’m mostly quiet and just an overall nice friend. Now that I’m a family dog, I’ve discovered the fun of going for car rides. At times, I’ve tried to bolt outside from the house, hoping to take a spin in the car. So be sure to watch me around open doors!

We have a fenced yard at my foster home, where I love to explore and run around and play, and I’ll need a fenced yard in my new home as well. I’m an energetic gal, so daily exercise is important to me. I enjoy going for walks, too. I’m still working on my leash skills, and doing well. I prefer walking in a quiet, familiar area for now. One of my greatest joys in life is playing and hanging out and learning from other dogs. I will need a home with another social, playful dog to be my friend and to teach me the ropes. I love lounging on the bed with the other dogs in my foster home as well as playing and following their lead. One time, one of Foster Mom’s dogs dug a hole under our fence, and I followed him right out through it. Oops! I live with a kitten too, who I adore, but I sometimes play rough with, so Foster Mom supervises us when we’re together. I’m looking for a quiet and calm home without a lot of commotion and with kids over the age of 6.

I’m still learning, still growing, and still figuring out who I’m meant to be, but I promise that with patience, kindness, and the right family, I will shine. If you’re searching for a sweet, gentle soul who just needs love and guidance to blossom, I might be the perfect match for you. I hope you decide to welcome me into your family. I can’t wait to be your dog.

Love, Jewel
