Jethro's Story

JULY 18 update on Jethro:
Jethro has been in a loving foster home in Bergen County since July 14th and has adjusted well. He is now used to his routine. He has two walks a day. He does his business on both walks like clockwork. He goes into his crate afterward. He exercises in his backyard then back into the crate unless invited elsewhere. He is very obedient. Jethro is good with kids and other dogs and is very affectionate. He loves to cuddle and has been very positive around tweens. Since being in foster, he is learning how to walk on a leash. Jethro now knows "sit" and "leave it". He has been sleeping through the night from 10 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. He sits in his foster mom’s lap. He does not bite and has a very sweet temperament. He loves kisses and hugs. He doesn't mind a hectic household. His foster said "he will be a fabulous family pet."
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Introducing the sweet, gentle, resilient boy Jethro. Jethro is approximately 15 pounds, five months old and healthy. He has recovered from the scare when the gunshot was shot at his litter hurting his brother Bubba, but he is a little timid around new things. However, once you cuddle with him, he opens up beautifully.
He was very submissive and gentle with his Kentucky foster mom. He loves people and other dogs. He is in great shape and ready to love. He gets along very well with his seven litter mates. He is not a dominant alpha male of the group. His sister Ellie Mae is the alpha female, Jed is the alpha male. Jethro loves playing with his litter mates. And of course he loves playing with toys and tumbling around in his foster pen in Kentucky. He really appreciates any attention at all from humans; he is looking for a human who really wants a dog to comfort. He has been sad not being able to be around more people.

Here is his backstory: apparently the husband had an unfixed female beagle/mix who gave birth to seven beautiful pups. The wife wanted the pups out, but he kept them. She threatened that if they got into the (unsecured) garbage again she would shoot them. They were not responsible dog owners and did not feed them much, and their garbage was accessible. Jethro and his siblings were hungry and of course went to the unsecured, accessible garbage, and she fired her gun scaring all the puppies and injuring Bubba. So, the scared husband got them all in the pickup truck and left him at the kill shelter with his siblings. Bubba had a swollen face that the previous owner did not address.

The story gets worse before it gets better. When they got to the kill shelter, the shelter was full. The manager there said that they would have to euthanize all the puppies if she took them in. They called a Kentucky rescue to help, that rescue called us and collectively we saved them. They went to a foster in KY who only had a large pen for them, but it was better than the alternative. They all play and eat in there together, except for poor Bubba who had already been vetted and had to stay in his crate separately. The puppies have been dewormed once at the time of this posting. Our typical extensive vetting which includes spay and neuter will be done on the 9th of July for six puppies and the 10th for the remaining two puppies. They all will get weighed again at the vet. They will receive the Home Again microchip, which is one of the best services. They will be registered at that time to the rescue, so they will need to be registered to the owner upon adoption. As you can imagine his previous owners did not give him much training. But this sweet little guy is very eager to please. He will be so happy to learn crate training, housebreaking and leash walking. He loves to be a good boy! To adopt Jethro or one of the other available puppies in his litter please visit www.peace4paws.org and fill out an adoption application. Thank you so much!!
