Jerry The Cuddler<br/>Who just wants to be a lap dog no matter how big he is? Jerry! Jerry is a sweet boy who is looking for his forever home. We decided to foster Jerry to give our current dog a little company. Jerry has been a PERFECT companion for our dog, and us for the time he has been here. Here are some quick bullet points we have learned about Jerry during his time with us.<br/><br/>1. He is GREAT with other dogs. Our dog is social but can be difficult to get close to at first. Jerry was patient and willing to let our dog set the tone for their interactions until they got to know each other better. Now they are best friends, and it is all due to Jerry being flexible with her! We have yet to have Jerry spend an extended period with children, but from the small interactions he has had when kids want to say hi to him on walks there haven't been any signs of issues. He can be a little scared of new people in general, but after just a few minutes we warms right up for any amount of love he can get.<br/><br/>2. Jerry is still young, so he does have a decent amount of "puppy" energy. Give Jerry a walk or some play time and he is a calm cuddler for an extended period after. We are also still working on a few puppy habits such as staying down even when he is excited to see us, and learning what is and isn't a toy of his to chew on. At all times he shows a desire to learn the right thing to do and has shown improvement. At this point Jerry understands commands such as "sit", "off" when he is getting a little too excited to see us, etc.<br/><br/>3. Overall, Jerry is a lover. He loves to lay next to us while we hang around the house, and never says no to a good pet/cuddle. Even though he is a big boy he still thinks he is a lap dog. Sit next to Jerry to give him some love and you can guarantee he is going to try to curl up in your lap whether he can fit or not. We want to keep boundaries, so he is ready for whatever rules his forever owners want to keep, but the more cuddling an owner wants to give Jerry seems like he'll be more than happy with.<br/><br/>4. Jerry is still getting used to car rides. He can be hard to convince to get in the car, but once he's in he loves to smell the fresh air.<br/><br/>5. Jerry was not potty trained when he first got to our house. It was pretty clear he had never lived in a home before coming to us. We have been so proud of his ability to learn. Having a consistent potty schedule is still helpful to Jerry, but he has begun letting us know when he needs to go to the bathroom by hanging out by the door all on his own lately. Jerry does great at getting in his crate overnight. We also put him in a crate when we leave. I am a night shift RN and there have been a few nights when Jerry has been in his crate overnight while I work. He has never had an accident and is always laying appropriately when I get home. <br/><br/><br/>6. He is not reactionary to other animals at home. We have neighbors with dogs that bark, and Jerry has shown he can focus on his space and playing with us in the yard.<br/><br/>7. Jerry is very good/easy to walk on his leash, but this is where he can be a little more reactionary/puppy like. If he sees a squirrel on a walk he is much more likely to pull and chase it than when he is in his yard. When this does happen I have been able to redirect him fairly quickly. When there isn't a cat or squirrel catching his attention he does great on his leash without much pulling at all.<br/><br/><br/>Overall, we have love having Jerry. Jerry has given us no reason to believe he can't continue to learn and be a perfect companion with more training. In his heart he is just a big lap dog who wants to sit and get as many pets as possible from someone who loves him. If our home was a little bigger we would probably be his permanent parents instead of foster parents!This animal is at the City of Chico Animal Shelter.
