Jansen's Story
Meet Jansen, a 1-year-old Beagle/Heeler mix weighing about 23 lbs, with a tender heart, a playful spirit, and so much potential waiting to shine.

Before coming to the shelter, Jansen lived outdoors on a chain and missed out on many of the comforts and experiences most dogs take for granted. Because of that, indoor life, routines, and busy environments are still new to him — and he’s learning, step by step, that the world can be safe and predictable.

Jansen recently spent time in a Snow Buddy foster home, where he made wonderful progress in just a few days. Once settled, his sweet and affectionate nature really came through. He enjoys attention, follows his people around for pets or playtime, and loves interactive games like fetch and tug. Seeing him relax into a routine has shown just how much he benefits from structure and reassurance.

Jansen is very interested in other dogs and would likely thrive with a playful canine companion who enjoys engaging and interactive play. He does best when introductions are thoughtful and when play stays positive and structured as he continues building confidence.

Spending time in a home also helped us learn that Jansen can feel unsure around young, busy children. He does best when interactions are calm and predictable and would likely be happiest in a home with older children or teens who understand the importance of giving him time, space, and gentle introductions as he settles in.

When walked through the cat room, Jansen showed no significant interest in cats, though as with any pet, slow and careful introductions are always recommended.

Jansen is a sensitive, affectionate young dog who is still learning what it means to be part of a family — and he’s doing his very best every day. With patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement, he will continue to grow into a loyal and joyful companion. If you’re looking for a sweet, playful pup who just needs a little understanding as he finds his footing, Jansen may be the perfect match.

Jansen is neutered, microchipped, heartworm tested, up to date on vaccinations (including rabies), dewormed, and started on flea/tick prevention.

Apply to adopt here:
https://orangecountyva.gov/159/Pet-Adoption-Foster-Care-Information
