Jack's Story

Meet Jack, a one-of-a-kind Blue Heeler mix with an unforgettable smile.

At just one year old and 41 pounds, Jack is everything you would expect from a young cattle dog: smart, athletic, loyal, curious, playful, and just mischievous enough to keep you laughing. He was rescued from a rural shelter outside Houston where he was facing euthanasia.

It's clear Jack has had a tough and unstable start to life but once he feels safe, his wonderful personality comes shining through. He is affectionate, incredibly sweet, and loves being with his people. He is happiest when he is included in whatever you are doing, whether that means going on an adventure, following you around the house, playing fetch, or curling up beside you for belly rubs.

And Jack has the most amazing smile. Give him a belly rub or scratch that special spot under his chin and he flashes the biggest, goofiest, teethy grin. It is impossible not to smile right along with him.

Jack is absolutely obsessed with toys. He loves stuffies and balls and is an excellent fetch player who will happily bring the ball right back for another round. He is also highly food motivated, intelligent, and eager to learn, making training fun and rewarding. He already knows sit and down.

As a cattle dog, Jack needs an active family who understands the breed and is ready to provide plenty of exercise, mental stimulation, structure, and enrichment. Hiking, running, obedience, agility, fetch, training games, or simply being included in daily adventures would all be right up his alley.

Jack is dog-friendly and loves having canine friends to play with. A playful dog sibling would be wonderful, although it is not required if his family can provide plenty of activity and socialization.

Jack is still working on his confidence in busy, unfamiliar environments. Because his early life in foster care was spent in a rural setting with limited socialization, public places and unfamiliar people can sometimes make him nervous.. His foster family is working diligently with him, and he is making progress. Once Jack realizes he is safe, he warms up quickly and becomes the loving, goofy boy everyone adores.

At home, Jack is a dream. He does beautifully in his kennel and sleeps quietly through the night. He is also very happy to sleep in bed with his humans, preferably as close as possible and belly-up. He loves kids, and adores running around with them playing. He can be a little mouthy when he gets excited and does a nibbly thing, but it harmless and really cattle dog cute.

Jack doesn't need a perfect family. He needs a committed one. His future family should understand that he has been through a lot and may need patience, consistency, and time to adjust. He is still learning, and we don't expect him to be perfect on day one. What we can promise is that underneath the nerves is an incredibly special dog who wants nothing more than to trust, love, and be loved.

Jack has already experienced more change than any young dog should have to endure. We are determined to make sure we find him the perfect forever home.

He is currently being fostered in Houston, Texas, but is available for adoption in many locations across the country. His $600 adoption fee includes transport costs, and if you are seeing this listing, there is likely a transport option available near you.

If you are ready for a smart, affectionate, hilarious, adventure-loving cattle dog and are willing to give Jack the patience and commitment he deserves, he may just be your new best friend.

Apply today:
https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/DSTR/Dog
