Humphrey's Story
Recently returned from the Coffeewood Canines Training Program—now back at the shelter and ready to find his person.

Meet Humphrey.

At just about 4 years old, this 85-pound goofball is a whole lot of dog—in the best way. His DNA says Pit Bull, German Shepherd, Labrador, and Border Collie, which basically translates to: smart, loyal, strong-willed, and deeply connected to his people.

Humphrey is the kind of dog who does best when life makes sense. He thrives with structure, routine, and clear expectations, and he’s already got a great foundation—he’s potty trained, knows his basics, and genuinely wants to work with his person.

Recently, Humphrey has been navigating some big changes, and we’ve seen him become more sensitive—especially around other dogs. Because of this, we’re recommending slow, thoughtful introductions or a home where he can be the only dog. He’s telling us he’d do best in a more predictable, low-pressure environment right now.

He continues to build confidence and will benefit from a patient handler who understands how to support a dog working through new sensitivities.

What hasn’t changed? His love for people. Humphrey bonds deeply, looks to his humans for guidance, and truly shines when he feels safe and understood.

Humphrey isn’t a “plug-and-play” dog—but for the right person, he’s going to be an incredibly rewarding one.

He has been neutered, microchipped, dewormed, heartworm tested, is current on vaccines, and on monthly preventatives.

Apply to adopt here:
https://orangecountyva.gov/159/Pet-Adoption-Foster-Care-Information
