Hugo's Story

Meet Hugo!

We're so excited to introduce Hugo, a striking and intelligent Malinois mix who recently joined our program from our rescue partners in San Pancho, Mexico. After a challenging start in life, Hugo is now safe, loved, and settling into foster care in Oregon - one big step closer to the forever home he deserves.

Hugo was found abandoned on the streets of San Pancho, underweight and not feeling his best, likely due to inconsistent access to food as a young dog. While we don't know how long he was on his own, it's clear he had to navigate the world far too early. Thanks to the compassion and quick action of our rescue partners, Hugo was brought to safety and given the care, nourishment, and stability he so desperately needed.

Despite his rough beginnings, Hugo has shown himself to be a sweet, attentive, and people-oriented boy who truly wants to please. He loves being part of a pack - bonding closely with his people and enjoying the company of the other dogs in his foster home. He listens well, responds to guidance, and thrives when he feels connected and included.

Hugo is leash trained and potty/house trained, and he's making steady progress with crate training as he continues learning new routines. We're told that he does great with people, kids, and other dogs. While he hasn't been tested around cats yet, his foster and rescue partners report that he's social, friendly, and eager to engage appropriately with those around him.

As a Malinois mix, Hugo will be happiest in an active home - ideally with a person or family familiar with his breed or similar working dogs. He'll benefit from ongoing training, regular physical exercise, continued socialization, and plenty of mental stimulation to keep his sharp mind engaged. Puzzle toys, training sessions, structured activities, and adventures with his people will go a long way in helping Hugo stay fulfilled and avoid boredom-related behaviors.

We'll be sharing more photos and updates as we continue getting to know Hugo, but one thing is already clear - he's a very special boy with a resilient spirit and so much love to give.

***Foster Family Update!***

Hugo continues to show what a truly special dog he is. He is incredibly sweet, affectionate, and very smart - and as he gets more comfortable, his classic Belgian Malinois personality is really starting to shine.

He has a ton of energy and enthusiasm for life and loves to stay busy. Hugo thrives when he has things to do, whether that's playing, training, exploring, or engaging with people and other dogs. He's always looking for his next adventure and would be happiest in a home that enjoys being active and keeping their dog mentally engaged.

He's making great progress with house training and has already shown he can be left alone for a couple of hours without accidents. He's also learning loose-leash walking quickly and is eager to soak up new skills. Like many bright, curious pups, he will happily investigate anything that looks interesting - especially if it smells like food - so keeping things picked up and giving him appropriate outlets to stay busy will help him continue to succeed.

Hugo plays wonderfully with other dogs and loves social time. He is a little mouthy and vocal as he learns to express himself, which is very typical for a young Malinois, and he's becoming more confident every day. He can get very focused when something catches his attention, which just means he'll benefit from continued training and structure - something he responds to well.

Hugo will do best with a family that understands high-energy, intelligent breeds and enjoys providing lots of exercise, enrichment, and guidance. With the right match, he has all the tools to become an incredible companion and adventure partner.

He's a joy to have around, and we're excited to see him continue to grow.

Will you be Hugo's lucky hero?
