Huey Loves Hugs's Story

If Huey was a person he would be the captain of the track team who volunteers on the weekends at the local hospital. He is athletic and personable, a great balance, and it doesn’t hurt that he is handsome. The reality though is he is a dog, with legs made for adventure and love to share.

We estimate Huey to be around a 1.5-years-old and we suspect he may be a Labrador mix but of course because he is a rescue both of those details cannot be guaranteed. He is a great mid-size boy weighing in at 56 lbs. You surely noticed in his photos but this boy has a set of ears on him that are so expressive and ensure he doesn’t miss anything.

Huey is so fortunate and has been in a loving foster home while he waits for his adoption day. This is wonderful for him and you! He gets to master all the skills needed to be the best boy and you get a dog that is home-life ready. This also gives us a front row seat to who he is at home. When you get a puppy its a cross your fingers and hope you get a good one, you never get to know if their personality is going to be the dreamy fit you hope for. That is the beauty of choosing a rescue though, you practically get a spec sheet and know if the quirks are the ones you’re okay with. With that, Huey has quirks that are common in rescue dogs and will be nothing short of just that -quirks. A confident loving person by his side, some basic structure and consistency is all any dog needs to succeed.

Let’s start with all his goodness, Huey is incredibly smart, motivate, and responds well to being led with confidence. Honestly, I was impressed with how he sort of straightened up and came to life when his leash was handed to someone he is familiar with and approaches him with respect and expectation. This is a boy that thrives with boundaries! And thanks to his foster family, he does great in a crate, is house-trained, and knows how to settle indoors. My favorite detail his fosters shared about him was how much he enjoys following his people around, a bit ninja like, a quiet shadow. He doesn’t want to disturb you, just to be close to you.

Now for the “tour” of Huey’s dream home- actually, it might be easier to tell you what is scratched off the list. Apartment life is not his favorite. If you watched his video, you know his love of running and playing in the backyard is too true and deep for him to ever live without a yard to let loose in. Also, apartment life means all potty breaks are on leash and he is still working on his leash skills in busy areas. Navigating hallways and sidewalks on leash multiple times a day is just not the Huey vibe. No fast-life or busy-cities for Huey. Huey has had several fosters, with different home lives and he has thrived in both despite how different they are. One was a busy family, 3 kids and the neighborhood hub for kids on the block. The other, a wonderful couple and 7 other dogs in the home, who he plays with well, shares toys, and fits right into the pack. Both of these environments would be considered “busy” but he was great! In the home with children, he built a beautiful friendship with the 8 year old, who said they were “best-friends” and all the kids praised him for being the funnest playmate with the best cuddlier. .The thing is, sometimes you can be good at something but not want that forever or always. This is where Huey is with kids, long-term living with kids is not for him. We joke that he is like the fun uncle- he will play all the games, share all the toys, roll in the grass, give 1000% to the fun- but he can do that because at the end of the visit they go home and so does he- the peaceful life. Same Huey! Same! Totally get it! Invite the kids over, Huey will be a hit, then watch him take the most glorious nap in his cozy, peaceful home.

Huey currently lives with 7 other dogs, he shares toys like a dream and is a great playmate. The key to him being in a home with other dogs is best seen in how the fosters manage one small element of their schedule- meal time. A very common and understandable behavior he has shown is that he does not like other dogs to attempt to eat his food. Same Huey! Same! This behavior is called resource guarding- food being the resource- guarding being him giving a clear boundary to another dog about what he has. The simple way his foster avoids this ever being an issue in a house full of dogs is by feeding him, and the others, in their crates and not offering treats or table food to any of the dogs. If you have experience with this type of behavior you know, it is easy to manage and can just as easily be a non-issue. On the other side, a one-dog household eliminates the potential for tension over meal time. You know what works for you and if he is your one and only you won’t go without- he has plenty of personality and love to give. The biggest thing to know is we want to set him up for success in a calm, structured home with someone who gets him. If you are feeling like he may be the one for you but want some more info or feedback on whether your home is that place, be in touch, we are more than happy to discuss that, no guessing needed.

This boy is smart, active, and has a thing for the great outdoors—whether it’s a mountain trail or a quick ride around town, Huey’s will be ready to tag along. Bonus- he rides well in the car, likes a good breeze, and won’t say no to a nap on the couch after any adventure, big or small. While he can be affectionate, he’s not overly needy. My favorite!

Huey is why we rescue, the gratefulness, the loyalty, and the deepest love you could imagine comes with the bond you share with your rescue. Huey has a head start on being the best boy, all the potential and drive, with a lot of love to give. With his very-own forever person, y’all are headed into a really good life together.

Adoption link: https://adopt.animalsfirst.com/animal/62cc8e128b02916730334440/671beba1258879d9430d812a

Please email Katiak@threelittlepittiesrescue.org with any questions.

Available for adoption to anywhere in the US. This is the feedback we tend to get, although we cannot guarantee perfect health.
*To fully vet a dog in the PNW at many vets it would be upwards of $1,800 just to fix, vaccinate, chip, etc. The adoption fees charged by our rescue do not cover our expenses medically for each animal, but we offset costs with donations. Your adoption fee is considered a donation towards actual costs.

Why adopt from Three Little Pitties?

The stray and animal overpopulation in the Greater Houston area is the highest in the nation. Statistics show that there are over 1 million homeless animals in this region alone. Three Little Pitties Rescue is a nonprofit dog and cat rescue that partners with the community to make a difference. Our mission is to reduce the homeless pet population through community outreach, free spay and neuter services, and saving all breeds of dogs and cats from the streets or animal shelters that oftentimes have no other option but to euthanize animals for space. This dog you’ve found online is lucky to be in our program, and even luckier to have you notice it!

Three Little Pitties wants to set you and your new pet up for success! We know our dogs and we work hard to prepare them socially for adoption. We are a network of dedicated people who are heavily invested in seeing our animals thrive. From the moment they are accepted into our program, our Intake, Behavior & Medical teams prepare them for adoption by properly vetting, behaviorally assessing, and providing customized plans depending on the dog’s needs. We provide weekly socialization programs for our dogs through playgroups and group leash training classes available to all dogs in our adoption program, and Doggy Sleepover, Doggy Day Out, and Ambassador programs for our boarding dogs. There is a professional dog trainer on staff to provide support for our fosters and dogs, and an off-site dog trainer for dogs that need more extensive behavior modification. This helps us learn deeply about every dog, prepare them for adoption, and ultimately match them with loving families. We seek to adopt to families who understand that these are rescue dogs and will require continued training efforts, but will be well on their way to being the best dogs that they can be!

It doesn’t stop there! Our adopters also receive these special perks:

• 30 day trial of pet insurance with Trupanion (must register within 24 hours of first vet appt.)
• A free private online dog training session with GoodPup plus low pricing for

Three Little Pitties Rescue's Adoption Policy
Three Little Pitties Rescue is a foster-based, all-breed rescue dedicated to saving dogs and cats from desperate situations in Houston, vetting them, and sending them to loving forever homes in northern regions. We are proud to adopt out animals who we have poured time, love, and money into preparing for adoption. We do our very best to provide top notch medical care. Dogs come with 2 to 6 months of heartworm prevention, or a ProHeart6 heartworm prevention injection, or they have been treated already for heartworms if positive. All of the animals with Three Little Pitties Rescue come from Houston. We have a desperate situation here and we are saving as many as we can. Our animals are either located in foster homes in the PNW already, or they are scheduled to travel there in the next 2 weeks. Adopters will have a phone interview with an adoption coordinator, have a reference and vet check, speak with the foster directly about the dog, sign an adoption contract, and pay an adoption fee. For dogs already located in the PNW with a foster, you will have the opportunity for a meet and greet to see the dog in person. For dogs who have not yet departed Houston, you will be offered a FaceTime call with the pet, and there may be an opportunity to meet the dog in person once it has arrived in your region if it is assigned to a foster home. We love all of our animals that we save. Our animals are transported in a nice semi truck with a transport team in the trailer with them at all times. Three Little Pitties Rescue is seeking adopters who are committed to the health and happiness of their newly adopted family members. We receive incredible feedback from our adopters about their experience in saving a life through our rescue. Thank you for taking a look at what we do and we hope you will consider one of our beloved dogs or cats for adoption!
