Huck's Story

***All animals listed on our website are in private foster homes. To arrange a meet and greet with a dog, you MUST fill out the adoption application so that it can be sent to the foster parent for review to determine if your home is a match for the dog. If a dog receives multiple applications, we operate on a best-fit basis, not first come first served.***

**I am looking for a home with another dog!**

Hi! My name is Huck! I have so much love to give. You can tell 'cause I have a heart on my head! I'm kinda goofy and dopey. No one knows for sure what my life was like before I got to Second Chance, but I am a bit shy and timid. My foster family thinks that I am a Bluetick Coonhound (possibly purebred, but can't know for sure), but I am not a formidable hunter. Most likely, I was dumped once my previous owner realized I would not be useful on a hunting trip (I'm a big scaredy-cat). I'm also not particularly smart or high energy (not so great for hunting, but perfectly fine for hanging around the house). No need to worry about keeping me mentally stimulated.

I have been more and more open every day since I got to my foster family's house, though! I love playing with all of their dogs. I am pretty submissive, and I get along with everybody. I have gained so much confidence at home, but I'm still unsure about going into public. I have really enjoyed my trips to the dog park, but I have not enjoyed large public events (e.g. shopping centers, Durham Bulls game). I still need some help gaining confidence on leash/ in public settings.

When I'm inside, I am calm and reserved. I mostly lay on my favorite dog bed, or come to ask for some affection. I have become SUPER affectionate and snuggly since getting used to my foster home. I am quite the love bug. In the back yard, I am much more excitable and I love to run around with my friends. A normal day with me is pretty low-key.

My perfect forever home would have a fenced-in yard for me to run around in. I would also need another dog around to play with because I need someone around to boost my confidence. Without another dog around, I can get anxious. I'm not the type of dog to shower you in affection at first, but in a few short weeks, I will be trying to snuggle with you in bed or curl up with you on the couch. I am apprehensive when meeting new people for the first time, so I would prefer a home on the calmer side and with a family that will take the time to introduce me to new people slowly.

I am neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped, and am current on my monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventatives. My adoption fee is $325. If you think I could be the one for you, please fill out an adoption application on our website: www.secondchancenc.org. Thank you!
