Hopper's Story

Handsome Hopper has been in foster since October and has been living the good life! If your type is dashingly handsome, playful, and athletic - then Hopper is ready to meet you! Hopper is a bright socialite and has made many friends in his foster home, even winning over his foster's friend who has never been a fan of pit bulls.

This handsome devil ain't no couch potato! In his foster home, "short" walks can range from 55-90 minutes to burn off this guy's energy, so he would definitely make an excellent hiking companion. He is strong strong strong (especially when: squirrel!) so will need a capable handler willing to put some work into exercising this guy. An adopter with an ample fenced-in yard-space would also be a huge bonus since this boy loves to race around and play and does a great job of burning off energy this way. He loves tug and fetch and is a smart boy who can be a bit of a chewer when bored. He is housebroken, knows how to sit, and is great at self-entertaining with toys if there isn't a person around to engage with. He also loves a good car ride and has been an excellent road-trip companion.

Hopper WILL need an adopter who is willing to work with him on better manners when seeing other dogs — he's spent time in training classes to work on his dog-reactivity, and hopefully whoever adopts him will be willing to continue to work on this with him. Hopper was fantastic with other dogs when he was first at the kennel — he loved to wrestle and play with them, and other playful/social dogs were big fans of his. Unfortunately, after returning back home to his original owner, he ended up back with us again and (for reasons unclear) his easy-goingness with other dogs has shifted some — nowadays, he can get a bit amped up and frustrated when he sees them, so his ideal adopter will hopefully continue to work with him on developing better social skills when it comes to other dogs. It's also been noted that he'd likely do best in a home without cats since he can get a bit overexcited when seeing them and has exhibited some prey drive.

Although he might do best as an only-pet, Hopper is one heckuva amazing, energetic, goofy, and earnest dog ready to find a fun-loving person (or people) to pal around with!

Looking for an athletic canine soulmate? You must schedule a meet with a dog in advance - we are not currently accepting walk-ins. Please look online first to see if there are any dogs you think would be a good fit for your home before scheduling a meet. To get the process started, visit www.tinyurl.com/meetacitydog and fill out the form. One of our adoption counselors will get in touch to schedule and confirm your meet! At the kennel, an adoption counselor will introduce you and your family to the adoptable dogs, share information we know about them, and discuss our suggested ways for successfully integrating a new dog into your home. You are welcome to meet multiple dogs. If the dog you adopt is already fixed, he or she may leave with you that day - otherwise, the dog can go home after receiving the spay or neuter surgery.)

About Our Dogs: All available dogs have gone through a behavioral and medical assessment. This assessment is a snapshot of who the dog is at that given time. We cannot make any guarantees with regard to behavior, temperament or health of any City Dog once they are in the home. Most of our dogs are picked up as strays, so we do not know what kind of home environment they were living in (i.e. with kids, other dogs or other cats), nor do we know if most of them are house trained. Everything we know about them is based on volunteer and staff observations. We do have some dogs in foster homes, where they will have more information about how the dog is in a home environment. It is very hard to tell with certainty whether or not a dog will be good with kids, cats or another dog. If you have kids in the home or another dog, we do require that they be present for a meet and greet with the dog you are considering for adoption.

Heath/Vaccinations: Dogs that are adopted directly from the kennel need to go to your personal vet within two weeks of leaving the kennel. All dogs receive their DAPPL, Rabies, and Bordatella vaccines, though you may be required to get follow up boosters. All dogs come microchipped and with a Cuyahoga County license.
