Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan's Adoption Policy
All potential adopters are required to complete an adoption application with the current information: name, address, phone, email. Should they have another animal, the name and phone number of the attending veterinarian. Should they rent/lease, the agent is to be listed so they may be called to verify a pet is permissible. Should they have no pets, a personal reference that is not a family member is requested. If they have another pet such as a dog, and adopting another dog, they must schedule a meet and greet with that dog and the potential adopted dog to verify they are compatible. Our adoption counselor sits down and asks about the potential adopter's desires in a pet and will explain characteristics of specific breeds to ensure full awareness of ownership. Also explained is the time to adjust to a new home, expenses of care such as vet bills, vaccines, preventatives, grooming, etc.
