Honcho's Story

Honcho believes the drive thru speaker is talking to him, so he talks back, with a string of excited little whimpers every time you pull up.

Honcho is a three year old neutered pit bull terrier, and he has been living in a foster home with a family and their dog, King. He is house trained and crate trained, he does fine in his crate through a work day, and he knows sit, wait, stay, leave it, and go to crate. He rides well in the car and he does best on a steady routine.

He is a cuddler. When you sit down he wants to be lying on you, he loves a good rub, and given the choice he would rather sleep with his people than in his crate. Hand him a plush toy and he is set. On walks he likes to explore and check out everything along the way, and the first time he saw the lake near his foster home he trotted straight into the water. He notices squirrels, and he lets them go when you tell him leave it. He loves people, and he is happiest when he is the center of attention.

A few honest things before you apply. Honcho needs a home without cats. He gets along well with King, and if there is a dog in the home, a calm and easygoing one like King suits him best. Other dogs on walks get him very excited, and that is the one time he pulls on the leash. He eats his meals in his crate, and in a home with another dog, each of them should have their own bone or toy. He has only met older kids, briefly, on neighborhood walks, so we cannot tell you how he would do with younger children.

Honcho is living in a foster home, so visits with him are set up by appointment. Petersburg Animal Care & Control's Adoption Policy
Thank you for your interest in adopting from Petersburg Animal Care & Control! We’re so glad you’re considering giving a shelter pet a loving home. We do not charge an adoption fee; however, all animals must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption, and the cost of the procedure is covered by the adopter. We’re happy to support adopters by coordinating appointments with our low-cost veterinary partners for spay/neuter services and other basic care needs. Adoption Process • We prefer to schedule appointments for meet-and-greets to ensure that staff or volunteers are available to spend adequate time helping you get to know the animal. • When you arrive, please sign in and wait to be escorted by a staff member or volunteer before entering the kennel areas. • For safety reasons, please do not reach into kennels or attempt to touch animals through barriers. If you’re interested in a particular pet, our team will bring them to a meet-and-greet area for proper introductions. • After your visit, you’re welcome to submit an adoption application. Applications must be approved before we can schedule a meet-and-greet with your family pets. • Meet-and-greets with personal pets are by appointment only, and for safety, two staff members must be present to handle all animals involved. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to make each match the best fit possible — both for our animals and their future families.
